Is the Jaguar XE SV Project 8 destined to become the next BMW M4 GTS?

Kinja'd!!!

With it being revealed yesterday that this new performance XE would cost damn near 200 grand, it got me thinking: is this going to end up being a performance car who’s performance is acknowledged and appreciated, but laughed at because of its bonkers price? It reminded me of the M4 GTS in that regard.

Kinja'd!!!

135 grand, with markups pushing it over 200, for what amounted to be a M4 with expensive carbon fiber wing, front lip, no rear seats and a special for no good reason water injection system that only took distilled water. Quite capable yes, but not worth the prices that were asked.

Kinja'd!!!

The XE SV Project 8 is going to cost supercar money for performance that literally AMG/M/S/RS/V offer for way less. Will it be worth the price? I think it’ll be worth 90 thousand. Anything more, go elsewhere, or just get you an F Type. Most people will probably compare it to the M4 GTS in that regard: capable, but overpriced. What do you guys think?

I’m not aware of any water injection systems that take anything but distilled liquid. Or are you saying the problem is that it didn’t take liquids like methanol either?

Yeah, $90k cutoff seems about right for a mid sized performance sedan.

No im saying they threw on some carbon fiber, gold wheels, put in this injection system and took out the rear seats and thought that was enough to charge supercar money for it.

Meh, I think there’s at least 300 idiots who’d buy it just because it’s ludicrously overpriced

I’m hoping that this is just Jaguar testing the waters for other high dollar cars. If this does well, it could to a proper Jag supercar.

Honestly, I could have done without this and would have rather them made a F Type SVR-R or something.

I think they went this route because it was low risk(cheap) to make.

As the owner of an XFR-S purchased, as I’ve pointed out before, directly because of Oppo, I choked on my soda and then laughed my ass off when I saw the price of this thing. Don’t get me wrong, I love my car. But I bought it when it was 3 years old and had 12k miles on it, and it already had depreciated significantly. I’m at work now so don’t have it with me, but I think the original sticker for my car was $105k. I can’t imagine an XE, even an XE that’s 5 years newer than mine, is worth an F-Type R more than my car was new — even if the XE has modestly improved numbers (40 more hp, 14 mph higher top end).

True. But kinda pointless. Why anyone would get this over an F Type is beyond me. Its 70 grand more than an F Type SVR.

I totally agree. The fact that the F Type SVR exists calls this whole car into question as to whether the XE is worth it. Its not. Factor in the Jaguar deprecation, like how you got a good deal on you’re XFR-S and its a non starter for me.

Pointlessness is the point. If they can sell a car like this for a stupid amount of money, then they can make a case for a dedicated model with an even bigger price tag.

Could this just be for homologation purposes? So that Jaguar can into DTM?

Could be. But I thought they had fielded an XF DTM car?

Yep. The two F-Type SVRs that I’ve seen were stickered at $132 and $135, and the sales guy told me that $132 was “negotiable.” Of course, I was just wasting time during an oil change so wasn’t interested in pursuing the conversation. But an XE at $60k more than the SVRs is insane.

I don’t think so.

Already, it has four doors and four seats, providing an (albeit limited) case for its functionality over a similarly priced 911.

Also, it’s outperforming even the XJ220 in most specs, quite the feat for what started life as a family car.

But you’re probably right anyway, because if this car lacks one thing, it’s a German badge.

FOr what it is though, I dont think it will have proper back seats for you know, passangers. Which will prably lead most to just get it without it. Which makes me wonder why not an F Type?

And it is out performing the XJ220. But you can chalk that up to just it being more modern. Its not worth the price they are asking. You would have to be British as hell and a die hard Jag fan to buy something like this.

Since the XE SV looks so near homologation spec (and the fact it’s ridiculously expensive), I think it’s competing more with track-focused cars like the 911 GT3 RS - instead the mid-range sports and GT cars the F-Type competes with. It seems the rear-seat delete is an option anyway - so it can still compete with the world’s fastest four-seaters too.

And why did I compare it to the XJ220? Because 25 years ago, the XJ220 was the world’s fastest production car - the star of every 90s supercar book, it even had its own Sega CD game. I think this may be history repeating itself - during the XJ220's run, there was lots of hype around another ridiculous fast British four seater. This car was in fact faster than, you guessed it, the world’s fastest car 25 years ago (the Lamborghini Miura). The car in question was the Lotus Carlton, which was still nowhere near as successful as any BMW M car of the time, but it did go down in the history books.

And that’s where I think the XE SV may end up - more of a ambitious stunt than a serious rival to the Germans. But that seems to be its intended purpose - to promote the Jaguar brand. The F-Type already does this, but the XE SV can now link back to Jaguar’s bread and butter cars and promote them too. Think Dodge’s Hellcat range instead of the M4 GTS. It’s a risky move, but I welcome our 592bhp overlords.
