I like ‘em. They exemplify what a community Oppo is. :)

I like theme days that require some imagination or are more obscure. That way you can have only 5-6 people posting and it doesn’t flood out everything else - you get a new theme post every half hour or hour.

POST SUBARUS or something like that where you have people posting in a crushing, drowning flood for about 40 posts... not so big a fan. That’s almost as bad as having all the theme day posts in one thread. OH!

A bunch of people with ADHD that are constantly distracted by the next shiny thing who share a common interest in cars?

Considering it takes about two whole, entire seconds to scroll down that far, I don’t think theme days and multiple posts about those themes are such a big deal.

What’s more annoying than the multi-posts are the mods (really, always seems to be the same person) who invariably posts a “CONFINE YOUR THEME POSTS TO ONE THREAD!!!! ARRRRRGHHHHHH YARRRRRRR RRRROOOOOOAAAAARRRRR!” post. (I may have embellished that a bit).

We get it. YOU personally (not you, the mod) hate theme days. How dare other people have fun or take a moment out of their day to enjoy a little lighthearted inside humor about a web forum that probably brings them a welcome respite from the humdrum of their real lives.

Curses, the lot of them! /s

LOLOLOLOL. And right on cue... if you check the Oppo FP right now you’ll see a mod post about theme days. With an implied threat joke about gun violence. That’s fun!

Ooooh I get it now. No I didn’t get Kinja’d, I just didn’t realize that you said you like theme days. For whatever reason I thought you were commenting on the picture :(

Well, depending on the extent... actual quality content can very easily get lost in the flood. So I get it. And the mod post is always the same one, and can be reshared at any time by any author. And that being said I do enjoy most theme days.

I actually think it’s a pretty good status quo we have going on here as a result. A little gray area that is sufficient in most cases for a bit of fun.

Yeah. I rarely participate in theme days myself. I’ve made theme posts a few times in the several years I’ve been an author, but for the most part, I just smile when I see others participating. It’s a little inside joke. Theme days are where we’ve gotten the jokes about Sebring convertibles and MR2 Tuesdays and Fiesta sedans and so many other things.

With all the different people here on Oppo who all have different ways of thinking, different political ideologies, different professions, different automotive likes, etc. theme days are something EVERYone can share in. That’s nothing but a good thing, if you ask me.

Community is good, but let’s use an example that’s near and dear to us both: Fur Face Friday. Isn’t better to keep it confined to one weekly post that is easy to reference the following week? Imagine if Friday meant that there would be 45 or so different animal posts, and you had to go into each individual post to comment? Imagine having to pick your favorites when they’re all spread out. I love how so many people will jump on board here to join in on a theme, it just feels so cluttered and harder to enjoy when it’s spread out.

And as for that mod post about theme days, it isn’t always necessarily shared by a mod. It was originally written by one, but I think it probably gets shared by whoever is grumpy about it that particular day.

To be fair, the “theme days in one post” thing is technically a rule. It’s just one we don’t enforce beyond occasionally resharing the reminder post when the saturation of a theme gets particularly heavy. And honestly just about every mod has reshared that post at least once.

That said, I do admit theme days aren’t the problem they used to be. There was a period where every day for the better part of a month had a “theme,” and it wasn’t even a clever theme, most of it was just “post [insert color here] cars today. We’d average more than 30 posts an hour during peak, and the problem was that people who had written up stories that they’d put major effort to, or people who needed help, or people who wanted to share exciting news, etc, were having their posts shoved off the main page within minutes, resulting in a couple dozen views at best. That’s why the rule was enacted. Fortunately Oppo has become much better regarding themes since then. The themes are (usually) clever and the saturation (usually) isn’t what it used to be, so other people are still able to post their news or look for help and know they’ll be seen (usually).

Hi Dusty! ^_^

*waves enthusiastically*

That’s kinda my point. Theme days aren’t really a huge deal nowadays. For precisely all the reasons you outlined above. I think some people just like to get pissed off about them. Which is sad since they’re one of the consistently good things about Oppo.

...usually ;)

The theme days do still go overboard on occasion. Not that I’m saying that happened today. I just got off work so I have no idea what’s been going on.
