Any tips on filtering the cross-posts?

Sorry if this is not the right spot for this..

I’m so tired of the political/cultural cross posts on jalopnik from the related sites. Anyone got a plugin for Chrome or something like that to get rid of them?

I’ll look at your Sponsored Posts and Kinja Deals, I get it, you need revenue, but I’m done with the rest of it. Tongue bitten so hard right now.

1. Kinja Blocker for Chrome. Type in the name of the author you don’t like and it won’t show you their posts. Makes the experience somewhat OK, here and on FP. I have all a ton of authors blocked, plus a bunch of (for me) annoying Oppo users. My list is close to 50 I think.

2. Then, do Ctrl+ on your keyboard until the text is so large you can’t see the sidebar and the recommended posts

3. Ignore the links between posts for other sites

4. Install uBlock Origin and block every add, just occasionally click on the annoying pop-up they started using recently.

5. Enjoy your page with way less posts than usual, but way less frustration as well.

I don’t post here any longer, or anywhere for that matter - there is no winning any conversations online. Steps above make these sites somewhat useable. I’ll log out now :)

Short answer: NO.

Slightly longer answer: each cross post is tagged from where it comes from, so you can choose to click it or not. Will share a screenshot shortly.

Thanks, I do use uBlock, didn’t know the kinja blocker one would block by author. I wish I could just block any posts with a URL not containing “jalopnik”.

Thanks; yeah, I know it shows it. most don’t bother me, I’ll scroll past them. Some are instantly frustrating and just don’t belong on an automotive themed site.

Kinja Blocker works a treat. I just added Terrel Jermaine Starr on account of deciding that I have enough FUD in my diet already.

*Checks history* Damn you’re right. I swear I’ve gotten a notification from you recently too.

Seconding uBlock Origin, it nukes ads nice and well, even those forced ads in YouTube!

Meh on the Kinja Blocker, I like having conversations with folks I don’t agree with. :)

Look for “shared from”, keep scrolling down without clicking.

Also don’t get riled up to the point of tongue biting when opinions are seen on the internet :)

While I understand your frustration, you have to accept that Gizmodo Media/Univision is running a business. So whatever is cross promoted from a sister site (Fusion, The Root, Jezebel, etc.) are justified for their business purposes. Like a show you don’t like, change the channel. As for me, I’m always curious to learn different things sooo....

Having said that, props to Musashi66 for finding you a solution. I’m usually on mobile and didn’t know there was a desktop solution.

Yeah. Cross posts that are automotive related (like when Gizmodo posts about hacking cars) I enjoy. I’ll tolerate anything that isn’t emotional “journalism” enhancing an us/them divide by providing a sounding board for hating on/mocking others. I don’t disagree that it has a place, but that place is not as a part of a list of articles about car stuff.

I actually quite enjoy the more congenial or cerebral conversations the kinja platform affords, and so Jalopnik competitors have not caught my attention much. But, to continue your channel analogy, I don’t appreciate soaps popping in the middle of my Top Gear.

I’m with you. I don’t want an echo chamber. It is, in my experience, a rare thing to find an article or a commentariat (is that a thing?) on some of the other related sites here that is open to dissent without it becoming immediately vile. I’ve found those conversations are best with a real person who has to deal with another real person in front of them. Keeps it civil. usually.

First and foremost, thank you for correcting me.

“I don’t post here any longer, or anywhere for that matter - there is no winning any conversations online.”

Sorry your experience has been bad. At least you’re still watching from afar.

Well then you’d be blocking Oppo since they have moved off jalopnik.com for some time, it’s kinja.com now.

Yeah, that’s one thing I don’t like about Kinja’s front page communities. Sometimes if you say one thing wrong, you’ll get piled on for days at a time. It’s not as bad as Breitbart where people will just openly threaten to kill you, but definitely disappointing.

When it comes to big topics, I try to aim my conversations towards just hearing the other person out, spreading awareness, or learning something new. I think one of my favourites happened on The Root. The other commenter was being absolutely transphobic and borderline hateful, though I just continued to counter their points politely with cited science to back me up. In the end, some people from the sidelines of the conversation learned new things, and all that matters to me.

True. Usually, I come to oppo for oppo. Ideally, though, I’d be able to choose to continue to see oppo cross-posts on jalopnik.

I commend your patience. I don’t think I can do that without body language hints to tell me how things are going. It’s nice to have the time to research and cite sources in order to make a compelling argument.. but more often than not it seems to not lead to an engaging conversation.

Keep fighting the good fight for reason! Regardless of your affiliations. :)

Truth be told I just have a bunch of drafts in my Gmail with updated sources. A lot of my Kinja conversations are about the same subject, so all I have to do is copy and paste my sources. Sometimes I’ll do something bigger though , which I think I’m overdue for something like that. I’ll spend entire weekends researching things few will end up reading.

Thank you so much! I will!
