BMW will drop manual gearshift variants of the BMW 2-series coupe in the U.S. to cut down the cost of certifying components in each market, and it has dropped manual shift options from entry-level versions of the new 5 series diesel, he said. It will also cut down the number of engine variants.

After owning nothing but manual transmission cars since getting my license in 1991 I fear my current 535i will be my last.

Damn cars are becoming faster and faster where manual transmission is just simply too slow.

I don’t want a faster car. I don’t want an autonomous car.

I want to be in control of the car I am operating, not blinking lights.

Of all the cars BMW could drop the manual from, they do it on the entry level sporty coupe that’s the most involving drive in the whole lineup?

It would be really cool if we could harmonize safety and emission standards with Europe to lower those barriers. Or if that’s too hard, create an agreement that allows cars using the other standard to be imported with some sort of surcharge.

Truth be told, I’ve seen hundreds of 2-Series coupes since they came out in 2014, but I haven’t seen a manual one yet.

Not even an M2. Most people here get them with the M-DCT.

The ONE car BMW makes anymore that should have a manual and they cut that?!?? My hope is they’ll do like the 3 series and cut AWD and convertible manuals since they’re all certified by body style anyways and I’d surely think the M240i and M2 would continue with a manual (ironically the fastest versions that one could argue most benefit from faster shifts... thank god not all is “logical”to that degree since we don’t live on the race track).

How about they just cut the damn GT’s?? Who buys those things anyways.

I’m not in the US, but this still seems to be a pretty nasty move.

Enjoy waiting until 2042 for these cars to become 25 years old and eligible for import. :/

It’s like they’re doing everything they can to alienate the buyers they used to be tailoring their cars for.

Shouldn’t this Article read, “BMW is attempting to Streamline their customer base.”????

This is one of the dumbest things I have seen. Why would they ever get rid of the manual on the small sporty car? I can understand getting rid of it on the 5 or 6 series but the 2 series?

The same with my E92. I am certain this is my last BMW.

Not surprised. With more people purchasing as a status symbol (see: lease cars and the like) and BMW not giving a shit about true drivers cars anymore, it was meant to happen. Soon there won’t be any at all. I for one unfortunately missed the heyday of good BMW’s but I won’t be buying one.

The problem is that European emission standards are basically worthless right now. They’re going to get better soon, but right now, the test cycle is a joke, and RDE hasn’t rolled out yet either.

And, some of the actual standards are more lax, too.

Considering the F30 is already neutered up here in Canada, I guess mine could be my first and last BMW.

It’s all xDrive + 8AT up here for the most part, 340i gets a stay of execution but I don’t expect it to survive when G20 hits.

Sad. BMW has really given up on engaging cars for the most part. Sigh.
