As someone planning on rebuilding next year, it hurts my soul.

These cards are used for bitcoin mining. Some retailers mark them up accordingly. Others not so much. Good luck.

At the end of last year I managed to pick up an 8GB XFX Radeon RX 480 for $200. Looks like they’re out of stock.

You don’t need the latest and greatest GPU right? That MSI Geforce 3gb gddr5 should run anything max anyway.

Block chain mining is destroying GPU prices and stocks atm. I’m currently building a rig my self, I have 3 GPU’s atm and am trying to find another 7..

Which is why I am still using 2 7970's. They are like 5 years old at this point. I had to turn off ultra on new games, so time to upgrade. I am not really interested in 4k at this point so a couple of RX 460's should do just fine.

might be better off finding a gently used one on reddit.com/r/hardwareswap

Let the seller know you have zero intention for mining and just wanna play dank games. Fuck these miners.

Look at the newer Nvidia ones , they are efficient and many require no power supply upgrade. I was under $150 for a EVGA Nvidia GTX 1050ti 4gb.

Buddy, you need to Hodl for a bit until the mining specific gpus come out. There will be a mass exodus from the 1070, 1080, 1080Ti, and RX gpus over on r\hardwareswap.

It’s been a long time since any of my knowledge of video cards was remotely current, but generally speaking, aren’t those expensive cards like the super high end, full-settings on 4K, VR-compatible, etc. cards?

In my very quick research now, it looks like there are several Radeon RX 580 based cards in the $250-300 price range that are all out of stock on Newegg and most other sellers.

Is there maybe some new top/mid range GPU that’s coming out soon and that’s why the only cards based on this are so expensive right now?

I didn’t believe those were America prices until I looked. Newegg is listing them weirdly. If you click on one and look at the sellers, it’s listing the expensive ones first. Most I looked at are like $600, and then under the other sellers, coming from Newegg it’s only like $250 (for a 1060).

Nope. Those are $200-$300 cards going for $600 to $700 because cryptominers apparently have more money than god. They are not in anyway high end or good for 4k. As it is right now, you may as well just get a 1080 ti, since that too is $700 but at least you get a high end card out of it.

AMD has a new line coming out in July, but a large reason for the high prices is due to mining of cryptocurrencies.

I typed the first sentence about 4k etc before doing research and landing on the RX 580 as an upper/mid-range card, then failed to realize you had posted RX 580 cards. Oops.

The price for the Gigabyte card seems about right - 6GB 1060s are going between $300-$400 Canadian depending on the specific model/size/clock speeds.

I was thinking of updating cards myself but the majority of games I play are at 1080p so I don’t need anything too powerful, although I want one that’s better just because I can’t play GTA V yet on higher graphics settings. I’m waiting for graphics cards to catch up to TV resolutions so that I can get a mainstream card for $300 to play at 4K.

The sky high prices are due to the bitcoin (and other coin) miners, they completely depleted the AMD stock (even after the price rose) so it’s now having a knock on effect to Nvidia cards as well so I’m definitely out of the market for quite some time now until those special computer items (asics?) become worth it again

Crypto currency mining has caused a world-wide shortage on modern GPUs. It will hopefully calm down in a few months.

Those prices are for the US market, not Canada. They’re aren’t supposed to be anywhere near $400 US.

Yeah I just so happened to be looking into video cards today as my Radeon HD 7700 is starting to show it’s age. I haven’t bought a new graphics card since 2012 but I figured maybe $200 could get me a solid mid range card. Then I learned of the crypto currency mining killing the availability of such cards. I don’t do much gaming so I can probably settle for a lower card like the 1050ti.
