What should I ask for this car?

So Oppo... I’m thinking of selling my car. There’s a story behind why that I don’t feel like posting publicly, the TL;DR is don’t mix family and money. Anyway, I’m trying to figure out what I should ask for this thing because around here (Pennsylvania) Subaru pricing is ridiculous. Throw away the book because it doesn’t matter in this market. It’s not that they’re all crazy high... it’s just that the older, higher mileage ones seem to plateau at a certain point.

Description:

2002 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS 5-speed, 143k miles. Base package, has all the power stuff plus cruise and fog lights but cloth seats, no moonroof, etc.

ZERO rust, was in Florida for the last 13 years, brought it to PA in December

Paint damage on the hood from tree sap- looks like chipped paint, actually is missing clearcoat

Fading clearcoat on roof and back bumper (car is silver so it’s not THAT obvious)

Passenger fender has a dent the size of an apple, there’s a few other dings and scratches here and there

Headlights are faded/clouded

Clean interior, no rips or tears

Did I mention no rust?

Mechanical stuff:

New timing belt and water pump ~20k miles ago.

New clutch around that time as well.

New rear calipers, pads, and rotors plus new front brake pads.

Tires about 5/32"

Passed PA state inspection/emissions with flying colors in February

Ice cold A/C

Dashboard clock doesn’t work

And then there’s this:

There is a bit of differential whine at high speed, it’s been present since I got the car and has not gotten worse, and I checked with some Subaru forums and apparently it’s pretty common for that to happen with these transmissions and many people have driven 100k+ with the whine.

Other than that it’s in perfect mechanical condition.

So what say you Oppo? What do you think I should ask for this thing? My research tells me it’s worth at least $3000 but my gut tells me that’s high.

I think $3000 is a fair price, though you can probably get more for it. The cheapest, beat to hell, rust bucket 2.5RS on my local CL is $2200. The examples that are in good condition, aren’t rusted, or beat to shit are listed for ~$5000.

Living in New England $3000 sounds like a killer deal.

$3000 sounds pretty fair to me; hell, maybe even a little more.

Too low. https://annarbor.craigslist.org/cto/6171609185.html Look at the rust on that thing. I bet that guy gets close to 3000.

Ask for 4k. Negotiate. Maybe get 3,500.

instantly regret selling. Look on craigslist for a one with less miles and less issues than one you just sold. Only find listings of cars for 5k higher than what you sold yours for. Get depressed. Drink heavily.

If it was a 1st gen / 22B I would get the dent and clear coat fixed and pay for a detail then list it for $5k... But 02, alas.

I’d probably list $3300 and hope for $3k, and if not get quotes to get the shit fixed.

Pics or it didn’t happen?

How about those head gaskets?

Unfortunately the problems with this car can’t be fixed (see comment above about not mixing family and money).

Different RS though. 2001 was the JDM WRX clone with an NA 2.5, 2002 was the bugeye body style. I think the 2001 is more desirable.

That’s not a bugeye though. The 2.5RS was top trim in the first gen, the WRX was here for the second

That’s smart but a shame. I would expect you could comfortably pull about $3k, but I’m not sure I’d agree with those who think you can get more.

Here’s another New England car which has a good pedigree, high odometer, and is manual: https://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/cto/6153327258.html

Another: https://syracuse.craigslist.org/cto/6168628505.html

$3k seems right to slightly ambitious.

ETA: no one liked the bugeyes, and for the 2.5RS they were fairly pokey. You’d be better off with a car two years older or two years newer, be ready for a struggle to get it sold.

I had a 2004 auto with 120k that I traded in for about $3500. I’d list it for at least $5k and you can prob. get $4k pretty easily. These things sell super easy in PA and the rest of the Northeast.

If you can wait until October or so right after the first 0.5 in of snow. Could then probably ask for more.

Since it’s rust-free, I’d ask about 4 grand. Take lots of pictures. Show the undercarriage to be rust free. Throw in a vape pen and a MONSTER cap, that’ll get at least two or three 16 year old kids to jump on it.

Bummer. I’m in Allentown, driving a Civic with no air conditioning. Just the functional AC makes it tempting, but I’m a long way from you.

Do what you can to fix some of the cosmetic items. That’ll boost your value pretty easily. Like if you polish the headlamps, and do a polish on the paint, I think that would help a lot. (Make sure to re-coat/seal the headlamps after polishing them!)

I think you’d be able to get 3k or even more out of it.
