Kinja'd!!!

This is a very odd picture, and I’m not just talking about the ‘50 Nash Rambler convertible and its... everything.

Well now we know the origin story of the unnecessarily-high beltline

What’s most odd is that the Metropolitan doesn’t really have any of its proportions altered from a full size Nash to work better on a small scale and look as good as it did - the proportions of the full size Nash were really that fucked up. I mean, Ford had somewhat high beltlines starting in the late ‘30s and into the 60s, but there’s not even any comparison.

The song, based on the horn sound/size reference/etc. seems to refer to a Metropolitan, which was sold as both a Nash and a Rambler, but weirdly enough was not a “Nash Rambler”... as such. To make things more confusing, the guy who made this video did use a Nash Rambler drawing approximately to scale, and the same model was later revived as the Rambler American with no (immediate) changes.

So, to sum up, the Nash Rambler in the song is both a Nash and a Rambler, but not actually a Nash Rambler, and the drawing used in the video is both a Nash Rambler and a Rambler American, but not the “Nash Rambler” in the song.

To be fair, a lot of people at the time probably didn’t recognize a difference between the Nash Rambler and the Metropolitan, because they looked almost exactly the same, the naming conventions were bugnuts crazy, and the Ramblers weren’t *huge*; they were alleged to be compact, though that was mostly due to wheelbase and not being as enormous as the senior Nashes.

And that’s even before you notice that it looks like the three women in the car are looking at the fourth woman’s spectactular chest and the “topless” and “headlights” jokes start flying. But also - the door frame/convertible setup on these is just silly, and the full-size wheels and bulky mutant wide platform raised high over a tiny wheelbase is... well, it’s funny. Like a clown. It amuses me.

There were also some Hudson Mets, which I’ve always found interesting. I almost bought one once.

Did only the Hudson Mets have the hood scoop trim? It looks amazing.

I do kind of wish they had Hudsonized the grille more to include a Hudson inverted V-doohickey. It would have looked really good.

No, the hood scoop thing was available on all of them. The badge was the only difference.

I love the “V-line” Hudsons. Such an interesting design element. Penned by Richard Arbib, who was an interesting industrial designer.

The Metropolitan was sold as a Nash and a Hudson (and, also as an Austin overseas), but I don’t believe it ever carried the Rambler badge. After Nash and Hudson bit the dust, it was just a Metropolitan, basically a one-model marque of its own.
