‘50s -

Kinja'd!!!

What’s more ‘50s then a Tri-5 Chevy? It’s ok I’ll wait

‘60s -

Kinja'd!!!

You knew this was coming, the Mustang was probably the most recognizable car of the ‘60s, and is through and through a staple of the decade

‘70s -

Kinja'd!!!

Volkswagen Type-II... whiles it’s not a ‘70s design, it’s popularity stems from the ‘70s so it deserves it’s decade (after some thought I think a gremlin or Pacer would fit in this spot better I am not perfect)

‘80s -

Kinja'd!!!

This is another one you should have expected, what is more ‘80s then the iconic Delorean? The ‘80s and the DMC are a match made in heaven

‘90s -

Kinja'd!!!

Now this is a toss up, mostly because every iconic Japanese car stems from this decade, I believe that the decade is best described by a Civic Dx, I might be wrong, you know the R33 was a ‘90s car....

‘00 -

Kinja'd!!!

This one was too easy, the suv boom and the luxury suv boom all stem to the gas guzzle Escalade of the early ‘00s

Anything I missed? What’s your decade in cars? Just don’t put a PT Cruiser on your list... seriously... dont

My only argument is that the Mustang (while around for more of the 60s) wasn’t the true definition of the 60s for most car people. I would say the Muscle Cars of the late 60's truely define how people picture the 60s.

Basically, Chevelle, 442, GTO, Montego/Cyclone, Torino, Charger from years 68-69.

I know it’s only the last 2 years of the 60's for that style, but I feel it really is how the decade is remembered.

I would say otherwise, the pony car was the 60's, muscles cars were shadowed by the massive sales of pony cars

Muscle cars weren’t shadowed at all by pony cars. The only reason you purchased a Camaro over a Chevelle was because you couldn’t afford a Chevelle.

90s should be an EG Civic.

I mean shadowed by sales, like if I sold 10000 Camaros to 1000 Chevelles

I mean it’s a fair argument. You had the Mustang, Camaro, Firebird, Challenger.

Just not the first thing I think of when I think 60s. I think Muscle.

In fairness you had offerings like the first GTO from back in 64 and cars like the Mercury Comet in 64 as well. Mercury even had big dual hood scoops in 64!

For me, it was a decade of horsepower and cubic inch wars to be the king of muscle.

I would have picked something more like a Ford Pinto for the 70s

It really depends on what you consider a decade is, how well something sells or how it’s remembered because even though for every 10000 Camaros you sell 1000 Chevelles, the Chevelles may be remembered more

Tbh the civics cut the generation in half, so which one isnt really as big of deal. I always remembered ‘96 Dxs and shit, so I chose it but an eg would fit with ezy, I also didn’t specify which gen because both gens work

It looks like for ‘67 -’69, Chevrolet sold 842,731 Camaros, and during the same time period they sold 1.144M V8 Chevelles (1.371M all Chevelles). While that’s close, the Camaro was still a new model and would have had its highest sales the first year (I would think). The Chevelle name was already three years old by this time. I’m sure the Mustang has better sales figures, but compared to all the other muscle offerings from Ford I don’t think the sales would come close. However, I do agree with your choice of the Mustang. I would have picked the C3 Corvette for the ‘70s though. Because cocaine.

The problem (other than I made up sales numbers that I thought seemed right) was that the mustang would’ve sold more than all the other pony cars, and definitely sold more than both of GM’s offerings, but Ford didn’t have a huge muscle car at the time, so the mustang would have sold 1000:1, but with Chevy the Chevelle would be more popular

Well there was the Fairlane, Torino, Custom, Galaxie, and Thunderbird.

Fairlane, Torino and Galaxie was Ford’s muscle line up, and (while I don’t have time to look up the numbers) they sold a lot of them. I don’t think it’s an unfair guess to say the Mustang old sold them, but it was a lot of cars. Ford was definitely in the Muscle game.

And don’t forget the Mopar boys and their Charger.

The Galaxie and Torino are really the only serious competition, and the Thunderbird really wasn’t muscle imo, though I could be wrong I would think it fits in with the sports cars

Well if we brought Mopar into this then the Challenger probably didn’t sell as well as the muscle cars, the biggest problem is while pony cars are the last half of the decade, some of the really muscle induced pony cars come in the early ‘70s

You know that’s a 60s safari bus that you have pictured for the 70s. The 70s had the custom van trend like this one below. Side pipes, murals, fender flares, and a hotel room in the back. lol

In regards to the thunderbird it depends on the generation. Little bird was a sports car targeted at the Corvette directly. The big bird was just a big ass coupe that came with a 390 big block as standard. I’d toss that over with the muscle guys, but it’s a weird niche vehicle that Ford didn’t seem to know what to do with haha.

There’s an argument to both sides of this. I don’t think either of us are wrong. It’s just a perception thing.

When I think 60's I think big blocks and muscle. When you think 60's you think of pony cars.

Nothing wrong with that.

The problem is that two big car wars were happening at the same time, and it’s hard to decide which one was more important. If I could I would’ve chose a Hemi cuda because that’s the best of both worlds but alas a 70s car

It was looking good up to the VW bus, then I think it kinda lost focus.

The split window VW bus wasn’t even in production in the 70s as you said, and it could be argued it also had a (bigger) resurgence of popularity in the 60s.

The DeLorean is very 80s, but only really because of the story (and film) behind it, the car itself is more like a late 70s leftover.

The Civic Type-R entered production at the very end of the 90s, and no one was saving up for it in Gran Turismo.

And the Escalade? Maybe in America at least, but ask anyone outside of the US and they won’t associate it too much.

So, I get your idea - I just think you’re just describing the decades’ culture instead of the decades themselves.

That’s not a type r it’s a civic dx, the quintessential hatch of the 90s, and the Escalade, or it’s many compadres really is only there to describe the suv crazy. I can’t think of an suv that is more well know then the Escalade. And if you want to bring other countries into this I bet there 50s and 60s look severely different. The bus was kinda bad, a gremlin would have fit better and the 80s had alot of delorean in it, even if only as a 70s leftover

Yeah, I missed the DX — still a late 90s design tho. But yeah, your points stand.
