Who’d have thunk it.

Backstory: filled up the Rex on the way to AutoX yesterday morning. Not more than a couple of km later it starts running like shit; pops and bangs, doesn’t want to get into boost, can’t use more than 15-20% throttle, fun stuff...

Park the car on the side of a major road for fear of causing major engine damage. Proceed to wait on the side of said major road for 3+ hours because CAA is incompetent and can’t give the assigned company/driver my proper location. If the driver/operator had called me early on, not as they finally did at the 3hr mark, they could’ve got me in 10 minutes. Get car dropped off at home, have strong desire to punch baby kittens for the rest of the day.

Luckily, there were no kittens around so I busied myself otherwise.

Fast forward to 20 minutes ago, I get a call from the gas station I filled up at yesterday (I had called them when the trouble started because I immediately suspected the fuel). It’s diesel. The carrier had filled the 91 octane tank with diesel.

Shit.

Crap.

Fuck.

Son of a bitch.

...

Thankfully, the carrier has already offered to take care of any damage caused. The car will get towed to the dealer as soon as possible (no time today, otherwise it’d be there already), they’ll do what needs to be done, and all will be right again. It’s a headache, but I’m happy to know what the issue is and that it will be resolved.

Anyway, that autocross I missed ended up being a shit show too. Between the torrential downpours, thunder and lightning and a Mustang hipchecking a curb (driver is ok, car is not) and going airbourne, they only got three runs in.

So yeah, fuck yesterday in particular. :P

just remove the spark plugs and then it’ll run fine

But it’s turbocharged, just like a diesel. I think you just didn’t try hard enough ;)

This happens at my work every so often. Just last week as a coworker filled a gas 16'box truck with diesel or a diesel with gas.

I’m glad the gas station has owned up to the mistake. That’s not gone well.

I may be able to recommend a certain gas station in southern Ontario if you feel up for a road trip. :P

Well, it already sounds like a diesel at idle.

So does mine. Turbocharging and direct injection will do that.

As a man well aquatinted with fluid mixup you have my sympathies. Fortunately Subaru injectors are cheapish. I’d bet your looking at new injectors at least

By diesel I mean a 1985 Mercedes in a third world country. It gets really rattly and dumb sometimes.

What are the repair requirements for a gas car filled with diesel? Are there a bunch of parts which need to be replaced or is it a simple matter of flushing it all out and replacing with gas?

Theoretically the diesel can’t combust in a gas engine because the compression ratio isn’t high enough so the main mechanical engine components should be fine. Should mostly just have to empty the tank and flush out the whole fuel system and refill with the correct 91 octane.

Since this is a fairly high compression, fairly highly strung turbocharged gas engine, the (direct) injectors and fuel pump(s) are the question marks for me and I wonder what the unburnt diesel might do the the catalytic converter.

I’m gonna let the dealer see what’s what and have them replace anything even remotely questionable.

Injectors, fouled plugs, cat converter with unburnt diesel in it are realistic possibilities, fuel pump(s) are questionable and worth bench testing, I’d say. Along with flushing the tank/system, I’ll have the dealer replace anything even remotely questionable.

I wonder how direct injection injectors compare with your experience of cheap-ish. I’ll report back if they end up replacing them.

so this blows, and had me thinking as I filled up today, how did the station get your contact number? oh yoi called them first (reading), but just how many people got screwed who dont know. or drove aroubd longer ruining cars more. Eventually the mechaniv will identify the iasue and they will trace it back to the station.

i guess my point is, you were lucky to have enough knowledge to suspect the cause

Yeah, the station got more calls later and the attendant was very good in recording my information and taking note of what fuel I had gotten and when. The same attendant called me back yesterday. I was impressed and I’m sure he did the same for others who called.

I’m definitely happy I knew enough to know early on what the issue might be and feel for those who wouldn’t.

Hopefully it was only the 91 octane premium tank that was affected, minimizing the number of cars that will see trouble.

there is certainly a far smaller group filling up with 91.

and here’s hoping the group of folks using 91 may also include a higher percentage of folks who may have been able to identify the issue quickly.
