Kinja'd!!!

You get a CEL, but your OBD scanner is locked in your other car, out of town...

UPDATE: And it went out on its own. Only 3 things I did:

- Tighten the gas cap (it was already clicking)

- Shake my intake a bit and wiggle the MAF sensor to see if it’s loose (it wasn’t)

- Stop by the local Chevy dealer to ask how much to do the code scan (one further away said it was free) and this dealer quoted $160 to “diagnose”, so I started my car to leave.

It was right at that moment when I was about to leave the Chevy dealer, light’s gone.

That happened to me. I had meant to get my scanner out of a car we were borrowing but forgot and 290 miles into a 300 mile trip the check engine light comes on.

Well my reader isn’t quite 300 miles away, just locked in a storage facility and I have to call the guy to get it for me and drive to get it.

Hopefully the light will stay off, wondering if it’s just all the outdoor parking with all the rain lately.

When in doubt, most chain auto parts stores scan codes for free.

Around me, O’Reilly will scan and clear codes. They’ll also let you use the scanner yourself. Sometimes they ask to hold your ID.

AutoZone an employee does it and they only scan codes, they won’t clear anything.

(I have both a bluetooth OBD dongle and a handheld scanner so it’s been a while since I’ve needed to do this.)

A lot of car parts stores will let you borrow a reader. Some will hold onto your license as collateral

Yeah I thought about that, but I looked up, the local Partsource doesn’t do it.
