My friend is looking for a big tour bus to buy. More on the vintage side would be best. She is looking at something like this. The plan is to do a book tour, but this is hitting the limit of what she would want to pay. Pleas help us find more converted busses! (Morning repost)

Checks all the boxes: vintage, eye-catching, celebrity prominence. You just have to sweep up all the fur and felt shedding...

Seeing this reminds me of my favorite part of Willie Nelson’s autobiography. When he had his tax trouble he wanted to remind the IRS who they were dealing with, so he parked the honeysuckle rose outside the IRS offices and whenever they took a break from negotiating he’d go to his bus give tours and sign autographs. He is sure the lines around block to see him worked in his favor.

Spent a little time on tour with him and Bob Dylan. He was super nice and this story is exactly what I’d expect.

Prevost is probably the premier coach builder, that’s why they are used as tour buses regularly. Current models run into the millions. The chassis are very high quality and they usually run a Cat or Detroit Diesel for power, so they follow maintenance and have the durability of the big diesel trucks. They are just a very high end diesel pusher RV.

You should look for more Flxible Hi-Levels and VistaLiner/Scenicruiser models. GMC 4108As are also good.

In corporate news, they’re owned by Volvo (who are thinking of getting out of the bus business).

You’d think that they’d use Volvo engines rather than buy them in from outside but there you go.

just an aside, those old two-stroke Detroit Diesels have been out of production since about the time that bus was made. There should still be plenty of parts out there, though the -92 series wasn’t around for nearly as long as the -71. There’ll probably be parts for the -71 engines until the end of time.

downsides is they’re rather dirty running, not as fuel-efficient, and noisy. Oh, and expect oil leaks. Oh, the oil leaks. not least from the “slobber tubes” (airbox condensation drains.)

This reminded me that my soon-to-be-wife loves Willie Nelson (Texas girl, even though I brought her to LA with me some time back) and her dream is to meet the legend. I now need to get his autobiography as a gift to her....and for me because this story is awesome!

Curious why she wants to buy.....has she looked at a long term charter? Just rent a bus, wrap it, and not worry about ownership.

Small issue is that they are in ... panama. Short drive through cartel alley and you’ll be set.

It is actually cheaper to buy and finance a bus than it was to charter one

I’d just feed about 10 parking meters in the lot next to Shellback and camp out every weekend.

Does Volvo make a flat engine for road use, maybe that is why.

they do sound cool. Though I think most of them also lack cold start aids (like glow plugs) so they can be a pain to get running in the winter.

Most of the buses near me have Volvo chassis with matching engines so I guess so! They use transversely mounted engines at the rear which I think is what Prévost do too.

Interesting, assuming you factor in possible repairs, which I imagine would not be cheap (or quick) for a vintage bus.

Most of these seem to be very well kept and some good pre trip preventative services would make it very reliable. But she was looking at something like $700-1200 a day for a charter and $700-900 a month for financing for buying a bus.
