Most people choose to restore their classic car, or in this case tractor, so it looks like this

Kinja'd!!!

But not all.

Like this Renault 4

Kinja'd!!!

Or this Beetle (note bodging)

Kinja'd!!!

Or this Corolla. The orange car in front is interesting. It’s a Ford Corsair to which somebody has fitted a Nissan diesel and the orange paint job. Sadly there’s rust bubbling through all over.

Kinja'd!!!

Or this Skoda Estelle complete with nearly-matching panels

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Or this Ford County tractor

Kinja'd!!!

Leave things go too far though and this happens to your Mk3 Capri. Yes, the back is as bad and the underside worse.

I’m all for patina: it shows that the car is driven and enjoyed, and it can tell many good stories. Paint and rock chips, cracked paint, small dents here and there.

But the instant I see any form of rust, you bet your ass I’m fixing it ASAP.

This - if it’s bubbling, or from the inside out, it’ll eventually eat a hole in the panel, and needs fixing.

Rust makes me irrationally panic. I’m happy Tucker isn’t rusting but you bet your bottom I check every nook and cranny when I can for rust and frequently wash in the Winter.

Did tucker come with a factory undercoating? If not during the project phase it would be the perfect time to do so.

My goal is to blow the motor before the rust takes her away from me. I’ll probably lose, because B-series motors can’t be killed.

Kinja'd!!!

This is Rusty, my 1971 GMC Vandura. I’ll sandblast some surface rust, and I may take Bar Keeper’s Friend to the paint, but that’ll be it. And I’ll fix up the interior to make it comfortable and quiet and functional, but with its patina it will remain.

Be careful what you wish for! If what you can see is that bad, what you can’t will be worse. Then again, it’s road legal (I saw it on the road heading to the show) and has to be tested annually so it must be reasonably sound.

Inspections are stricter in the UK/Europe than they are here (though ours are more strict than the US, of course), so I assumed it had to be reasonably sound! I would get the rust fixed though...

That Estelle is sweet! Pretty sure that’s an ‘84 model. I wonder what options it was packing as the badging suggest it’s a S (Standard) with L (Lux) features, which was never a thing in Czechoslovakia.

I want an old Capri. And a merkur xr4ti in the garage next to it. I want euro fords that America got but never loved like they deserved.

But where I am going to be living soon, I don’t think an old Capri would even survive in a garage, just being near that much salt may make it rust.

Yes, it’s 84. The first two digits of the number are a clue!

Dry climate? We don’t get much surface rust - it goes from from the bottom up and inside out so by the time you see it things are a lot worse than they look.

This vehicle was garaged in the Central Valley of California. Highly favorable conditions. I bought it from it’s original owner with 80k miles on the clock.

Oh that’s pretty cool, I love when you can determine the age of a car thanks to the license plate only.
