F150 Vs. Taco

My father is looking to ditch his 335GT in the near future (hooray!) for a pickup. He’s been looking at F-150's because they’re “giving them away.” So he says. Whenever I hear about dealers saying oh we’ll take 8k off the sticker, it’s always a situation where it’s like “fuckin’ right you will because the “sticker” value is loony.” Similar to when a retail store is going out of business they jack up all of the prices and have a “clearance” sale.

Kinja'd!!!

Now I have nothing against the F150, I quite like Ford trucks. I currently own one , and I’ve owned one other and 3 explorers. However, my father will be like most pickup owners and put little more than his golf bag in the bed 90% of the time. In addition hes up around the 40k mark on what he would spend on a new truck. When I heard that I thought the same thing that a lot of you just thought. “He could get a brand new, nearly loaded Taco for that kind of cheese!”

So that is what I told him. It wasn’t really on his radar, but after I mentioned that it would probably be a better vehicle for the type of things he would do with it, he was interested. I went on to mention that the resale is insane, and that it is a much more manageable size. So we’re going to go drive one as soon as tomorrow night. He’ll be looking for a crew cab. Not sure that he cares about the length of the bed, but I mentioned he should shoot for the longer bed (apparently not available on the top two trim levels of Tacos)

He’s already driven an F150 (XLT I think) that was somehow nearly 50k (sticker). He liked it, but mentioned that it felt huge.

So Oppos who you got, and what trim would you go with?

F-150 lariat fx4

But watch out. The price can be a mofo if you spec it the way you want

Doesn’t sound like he’ll need the locker, so I’d do what I did and go with the Sport. Do at least get the tow package, though. Mine is a 2015 though. I did not, however, get the long bed. I have a DCSB. You’re definitely right about resale. I had a purchase offer from a dealer for $31k, which is only $2k less than I paid for it a little over two years ago. After 10 years, I can probably still sell it for between $15-$20k, given with clean ‘05s go for now! Retain over 50% after 10 years? That’s pretty cool.

Chevy Colorado or GMC Canyon. Full-time 4wd instead of shift-on-the-fly in the Taco, long box crew cab is available on all trims except the Colorado ZR2 (I prefer short box mysel), and I’m sure GM is throwing their usual amount of money on the hood this time of year. The Z71 trim adds an automatic locking rear diff well. Colorado Z71 4wd crew cab short box starts at just shy of $37k before incentives. LT is cheaper. Price goes up to about $45k for a loaded Canyon Denali crew cab long box.

I’ve had full sizes (Silverado and F150) and a the previous gen Tacoma.

I bought a current gen F150 XLT Supercab 2.7L. Without a doubt, this has not only been my favorite truck, but my favorite vehicle period.

I’ve owned about 25 vehicles in my life, including the first gen Miata, BMW E46 and E90 (all manuals by the way), Corvette C4, Porsche 911 SC, etc. I’ve had quite an varied ownership experience, but my F150 has been my best overall vehicle.

A lot of it has to do with that 2.7L Ecoboost. Its a gem, probably one of the most advanced motors in any truck. It out tows all my previous full size trucks (all had V8s), gets me 25 mpg on my highway commute (if I stay off boost), and will actually out accelerate every single car I’ve owned from 0-60!

I can also carry 6 people, while carrying all their junk, towing a boat, while getting over 23 mpg on the highway doing all of this.

My last generation Tacoma was a great truck, but couldn’t haul my current boat, carried 5 people in less comfort and got a lot worse mpg while slower than most of the vehicles I’ve owned.

If fuel economy isn’t a concern, what about a Tundra? You can get a really nice setup in a stock Tundra for around 40k and they hold their value really well. Not as well as a Tacoma, but still really well.

The Ferd looks better, but they are freaking huge once you get away from the base cab.

I will mention it to him, but I’m not a fan of the aesthetics. We have similar taste... We almost always car shop together, last time I couldn’t make it but he was off to get a 335 so I didn’t worry. Except they sold that 335 and sold him on the 335GT which would have never happened if I was there haha.

He’s really only considering one or the other. I mentioned the Colorado, he wasn’t biting.

if its not his taste then its not. Just throwing it out there. My guess is that he wont like the seating position of the Tacoma, I certainly don’t love it but I could love with it on account of knowing why its like that.

He’s pretty set on the Ford if hes going with a full size. Although I’ll get him to drive one when we have a look at the Taco.

It might, he always bitches about the ease of getting in and out of cars. I will mention the Ridgeline without my opinion attached and see what he says!

Thats why I bring up the ridgeline, It sounds like he’s an ideal candidate for it assuming he can get past the stigma of the thing. As I’ve said previously, I’ve never been one for letting other people’s opinions of a thing influence what I think of the thing, but It can involve a certain type and degree of thick skin that may not be palatable for most.

An F150 is only 6 inches wider than a Tacoma. Depending on cab and bed length, it may not be much longer. Fuel mileage will be about the same.

For options, pick whatever engine suits your fancy. Check the axle ratio, and don’t get the tallest (lowest number) one. Not sure if they have them available, but get the transfer case with the auto-4x4 mode. Finally, a backup camera and front & rear parking sensors.

Oof the colors, or the lack there of might be a deal breaker on the Ridgline for him. He really wants a red truck, would settle for something else, but he hates greys of all kinds. Sliver and grey are it on the ridgeline.

I like the Toyota, but for the money the Ford gives you more with a low/mid grade truck. How long does he plan to keep it? If just several years Ford, if the rest of his life, Toyota.

I dunno, I think sticker on the Taco is loony too.

How long is he gonna own it? How many miles is he going to put on it per year?

If he’s not gonna drive it much, I think leasing an F-150 makes more sense.

And if he’s used to driving luxury cars than an F-150 definitely makes more sense than a Taco.

The Tundra is getting really old. Not even a comparison. My boss has a 13 Tundra pro rock and I have a 15 lariat fx4. The Ford is better in every way.

Hah, it is.

Hard to say on ownership, if you ask him hell tell you a while (5 years or more), but his history says more like 3 years. He will put less than 7k on it.

I doubt he’ll lease it but you’re right that it makes more sense.

Great point!
