Kinja'd!!!

I hate my iPhone SE. Sure it works, but yawn. I’m bored with it. Apart from CarPlay in my GTI, I despise using this phone. And Apple killed iTunes, so while I still try to manage my music, it’s not worth my time fighting with shitty software anymore. I have all my tunes on a MSD card.

I thought I wanted the Nokia 6; stock Android, expandable storage, and great design. However, I’m on ATT, and they just announced they will finally sell the 6 in the US, but it won’t work with ATT fully. So, that’s out.

I know the S8 is supposedly amazing, but I hate the curved screen. Bixby is stupid. And I’m not much a fan on Samsung phones in general. Professionally, I have far more issues with their phones than anything else.

The LG G6 looks cool, but I hate the LG skin on Android. I’m not sold on the zero bezels either.

I tried a Huawei P8 Lite once. I flat refuse anything Huawei unless it can be flashed to stock Android.

Does anyone make a ~5-inch screen, stock Android, MSD slot, ATT-compatible phone that doesn’t cost $600+ anymore? For a design reference, I adore my old Nokia 830. I would go back to that phone without hesitation if I could use Windows Phone/Mobile/10-lite for work.

Or are there any recent phones that can easily be flashed to stock that would meet my demands?

There are some cool apps that don’t require any management of your tunes other than folder structure. I’m a spotify user for anything new. But all 70 some GB of my stored music I listen to on my phone via “evermusic” it syncs with Google Drive (or other cloud storage services).

Does it then make all you music ‘streaming’ then? I want my files with me because I own them and should not have to pay for data to access something I already own.

I was going to suggest the Oneplus 5. I’m either going with that or an LG for my next phone. Really not enjoying my S7.

What about a Sony Xperia? They have almost stock Android and have a similar boxy design of the Lumia. You can get Sony’s 2016 flagship, the XZ, for 450 on Amazon right now

Evermusic is streaming, but Dropbox has an “offline” switch for folders and you can play tunes straight out of it. So as long as you let the initial sync happen over wifi then you won’t be using cellular data.

Love the design, but have not heard good things about those phones. And from the reviews it seems it’s a buyer-be-ware experience as Sony won’t honor the warranty on them in the US. :/

I just got my wife a Moto G5 Plus 32 GB for $229. It is totally fine and basically all the phone anyone needs unless they have some specifically high-end desire. 5.2” 1080p screen, Snapdragon 625 octa-core, basically stock Android Nougat, above-average camera, microSD slot, etc. It is unlocked and compatible with all US carriers including Verizon. There’s a 64 GB version that also upgrades the RAM from 2 GB to 4 GB for $299.

The camera lens protrudes a bit from the back and seems like it would be easily scratched but the case I got for it has a raised lip around the hole for the camera hump which gives some protection.

If you don’t need Verizon compatibility, the ZTE Axon 7 Mini is on sale for $199 direct from ZTE. A few more tweaks to Android compared to the G5 Plus but not terrible. A little bit smaller overall size with same 5.2” screen, and it’s AMOLED instead of IPS LCD. It has a Snapdragon 617 instead of the 625, and 3 GB of RAM. It doesn’t shoot 4k video like the G5 Plus does.

Mmmmm I have a few on my roster you might be interested in:

Honor 8 ($400 but could be found for half-price on eBay): Basically the most gorgeous phone I’ve ever owned. It’s quick, it does everything you ask of it without complaint. However, it has EMUI, which tries to replicate iOS. I recommend dumping it for a better Rom.

Honor 5X (under $200): For a phone that costs less than $200 it works very darn well. It has a few cheap Chinese phone quirks and is phablet-sized, but it’s absurdly solid with a Rom like Resurrection Remix.

Nexus 5X  (around $200): Missing that MSD slot, but by far is one of the most impressive Androids I’ve owned. Flagship performance out of a smaller, imo attractive package.

Nextbit Robin (around $100): A Nexus 5X for people who don’t like how a Nexus 5X looks.

Oh and I’m totes willing to buy that SE off you! :D

I’ll pass on those. The Nokia 6, while it is cheap, does not look that way. Those look like they are really shitty phones.

Are you maybe replying to the wrong comment? I didn’t say anything about One+ and the Moto G5 Plus and ZTE Axon 7 Mini both have nice metal builds. I can’t speak to the ZTE but having held the G5 Plus in my hands it does not feel cheap.

Ok, figured that was the case. Definitely check out the Moto G5 Plus and ZTE Axon 7 Mini. They’re totally reasonably priced. The link I tried to make to the G5 Plus for some reason is redirecting to the homepage but it’s easy enough to find.

If you want something that’s near-flagship level, the regular ZTE Axon 7 is worth a look. 5.5” 1440p AMOLED, Snapdragon 820, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB ROM, etc. It’s $399.

I’ve had good luck with my Moto X Pure which is now almost 2 years old, and my wife is very happy with her G5 Plus in the couple weeks she’s had it.

Before the G5 Plus she had a ZTE ZMAX 2 which was a very basic unlocked phone but generally pretty decent for what it was trying to be.

So overall my experience with both Motorola and ZTE is favorable.
