back then they didn’t really do stuff like put locators and tabs/slots in sheetmetal parts, instead relying on jigs and fixtures to hold stuff in place for welding. this left a lot of room for variation.
edit: and the Vega was built at a time when labor relations between line workers and GM management were, uh, strained. Lordstown (where the Vega was assembled) was particularly bad, since GM was pushing to crank these cars out as quickly as possible. So you get these kinds of “eh, fuck it” sloppily built cars.

factory started putting it together crooked somewhere in the floor pan, one panel out, every panel attached to it also out that much. Many spotwelds missed by the factory because the panels were misaligned. hood and trunk areas had paint repair from the factory, in wierd places. I think they had a car come off the line and the hood and trunk didn’t close. wierd damage behind licence plate and by the hood hinges, in an original paint car with no collision history.
Repaired before it left the factory.

I live not-far from Lordstown and drive past the plant now and then. I can’t help but think of Vegas, Cavaliers, and Cobalts when I do. They make the Cruze there now, which aren’t terrible at least.
