***STANDARD DISCLAIMER RE DISTORTION EFFECTS OF WIDE-ANGLE LENS AKA “OBJECTS IN CAMERA ARE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR”***

As an introduction to the situation, here we have a grey Corolla moving from the right lane to the left lane.

Kinja'd!!!

Then, 20 seconds later, they want back over... having accomplished nothing and totally oblivious to the fact that there are other cars within a mile of them.

Kinja'd!!!

I’ll be the first to admit that I probably didn’t do the smartest thing myself, but: a) They’d stopped signalling even as the gap in front of me became available to me. To me that means “I give up, I’ll wait” rather than “You mf’ers won’t obey my signal immediately when you’re right beside me? NEXT TIME I WON’T USE THEM”. Especially since one thing this moron seemed to be doing right was signalling. b) If you aren’t making a move to get in, I’m not going to hang around waiting for it. I’ll keep an eye on you for sure, but it’s not fair to me or those behind me to dick around while you make a decision. c) You may have heard tires chirp behind you. That was me. The ABS didn’t stand a chance at engaging (not that I would have wanted it to, frankly). You had no room for that move, especially without a signal. Go fuck yourself.

I give all Toyota sedans a wide berth. Old Dodge caravans fall into the same category.

I don’t think you’re asking for too much when it comes to signals. The way I see it, NOT signaling is a solemn promise not to leave one’s lane. It’s not just about mere convenience or courtesy, it’s about how this whole “driving” thing works. There is no “I’m continuing straight ahead” signal, so the absence of a turn signal is how you communicate that message.

In my state, this isn’t just common sense. You literally don’t even have the right to leave your lane without signalling first.

I try too. At the same time I’m not going to delay me and those behind me because they aren’t making up their mind.

I’m absolutely in agreement with that. Here it’s literally “If you can see another car on the road, anywhere, you signal”. It only makes sense. I don’t think I’m asking too much either.

What I meant was, I took (or was about to fully commit to) a calculated risk that they were staying in their lane. If we’d hit would it have been worth it? No. But like I said, dicking around waiting for them isn’t fair to me or those behind me, and for most part doesn’t help the Corolla dude either since they usually are too terrified by this point to take advantage of a space handed to them on a silver platter.

I actually do the same kind of thing sometimes. It’s almost like a calculated game of chicken . It’s not something that I’ll try to defend as a good idea, or advise others to attempt, but it’s my own personal solution to this sort of problem. Turn signals ARE necessary, period.

I don’t mind letting other cars in front of me. Really, I don’t. But I do demand a signal. Even if their car’s “body language” suggests that they want to get out of their lane, I pretend not to notice unless there is an actual signal. Oh, I’m on my toes alright, and I’m ready to do what I have to do to avoid a collision. But I’ll let things get close, hopefully too close for their comfort.

i’m not defending not using blinkers, but around here, blinkers only signal for the other people to close the gap so you can’t move over. You know, cuz that one car is going to make you late for where ever you are going.

Those people I usually edge towards... gently, but deliberately. They back off. I mean, if you gotta get in you gotta get in. I have no issues with someone making good use of a spot I may have left* as long as they give warning, and I expect to be treated the same.

This guy... as far as I’m concerned he forfeited his right to that gap even if there was enough space by cancelling his signal. And “gotta get in” didn’t apply, literally 10 seconds down the road there’s another turn that would get him where he was going within a minute.

*Unless they’ve proved themselves totally incompetent... then I’m really not comfortable having them in front of me. I still probably won’t box them out though, in most cases.
