It gets closed during heavy rain because the stream also crosses the railroad at that point. The sharp downward angle makes it a bit interesting if you take it at speed.

Good going, Kinja.

Ok that’s just stupid. I’d imagine the railroad tracks were there first, but why make the road go under the tracks on top of a creek? It had to be easier to just build a ramp up to tracks and have a crossing right?

In the case of this road, it’s kind of a shortcut through the creek. The gap HAD to be there for the water to cross, and I’m sure when it was built the road was dirt and people just used it to go through. There are major bridges over the railroad just a mile north and south.

I get that, but I still think it probably would have been easier to build a road up to the tracks than pave a road over a creek. Maybe I’m wrong though.

Trying the link again, trust me. The creek was a minor construction compared to building an overpass for a two lane, lightly traveled road.

I didn’t mean an overpass. Just a ramp up to the level of the tracks and a regular crossing where you drive across the tracks.

I just realized that since I’ve been in Virginia, I’ve never once gone over a leveled grade railroad crossing in any form.

But what about 25 or 6 to 4?

Really? Those are pretty common around here, especially for lightly traveled 2 lane roads

Yeah, the area I live in has none. When I lived in California I traveled over them almost every single day. It’s weird.
