what would it take to launch a 747 off that thing? I’m guessing a very very powerful catapult

They would need to get the bridge off it first.

Sadly no ‘pults on this, so they can’t even try (suspect it would be a bit rough on the 747 regardless). It’s about 150ft shorter than the Forrestal, so they might still be able to pull off the C-130 trick:

“... and they will be used a lot” . To make such a surprising statement the RN (or at least Cap’n Kyd) must certainly be predicting a half-a-century period of unprecedented geopolitical instability.

I like to think that Captain Kyd is going to use this to live up to his namesake.

Seriously, I can’t really imagine how many jokes Commodore Jerry Kyd, RN, has been subjected to since he was a cadet.

I know, right? At first I was amuse then I felt sort of sorry for him.

I won’t blame him if he does hijack it and take to piracy on the high seas.

It would be absolutely lovely if he were in fact related to Kidd.

Probably a lot less than Seaman Staines.

His predecessor on HMS Ark Royal was Captain John Click, Capt. Clink.

Prior to that it was Captain Michael Mansergh, Capt Mansergh (man-sir).

His predecessors on HMS Illustrious were:

1984-1986: Captain Alan Grose RN, Capt Grose

2004-2006: Captain Robert Cooling RN, Capt Cooling

2007-2009: Captain Steven Chick RN, Capt Chick

2009-2010: Captain Benjamin Key RN, Capt Key

Back in the Eighties, ALCOSAN (the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority) had a tugboat & work barge skippered by Jim Kirk. The Gateway Clipper Fleet crews had a lot of fun with that. Also, the first captain of the USS Zumwalt was James A. Kirk.

Could be used for humanitarian missions like the U.S. did in Asia. Lots of medical people on Board. Produces fresh water all the time. Secure mobile Airport to get people in and out 24 hrs. a day.

For that you have ships of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary and you don’t necessarily need a full-size carrier. In fact the same argument applies: does captain Kyd foresee such a number of natural disasters that it is worthwhile to build such a costly ship? Why not build a dedicated maxi-hospital ship then?

I still think his statement is either worrying or very strange.

Of course we could start another discussion about the political advantages of giving some work to those shipyards; the fact that procurement policy is not always governed by reason; and the eternal question of what really is the relevance of the UK military in today’s world and its alleged need of a projection force.

But that in fact has nothing to do with what he said.
