Having original wheels under a classic cars doesn’t seem to be a thing in Australia...

I’m sure you’re not being too serious about it, but I do hate seeing cars that I want and will, realistically, never own. It gets depressing after a while.

I also dislike seeing big wheels with rubber band-like tyres on older cars, but I also imagine that the correct 15" 215/70 VR Michelin XWXs for that sort of car would be ridiculously expensive. They are made to order and if you factor in freight costs to the other end of the world... I am sure you get the idea.

Also: maybe the original wheels were damaged (they could be magnesium wheels, which become extremely  fragile over time). Now try to find some usable Mistral/Ghibli wheels nowadays...

Oftentime these cars are owned by enthusiasts who are not rich, they just were lucky enough to acquire/inherit one when prices were low.

I love the asymmetry of the bonnet’s air outlet (inlet? maybe it is not even functional)

There could be many reasons. Maybe the originals are just stored in his garage? The original wheels should be very expensive in any case.

The car seems to have some electric issues. The headlights are closed but they are still on.

I still like this car quite a lot. Ghibli and Khamsin (old version in both cases) are my favorite Maseratis.

Yes, another possibility. Cars deteriorate much faster if they don’t move from time to time, so fitting oversize newer wheels may just be a compromise. But big wheels and tyres would also transmit more vibration to the structure, and you would need the dampers, joints and bushings to be in perfect condition (or they would wear even faster).

Good eyes, I had not noticed about the lights on. On the other hand, Italian electrics of that time were only marginal, so...

They are very nice indeed, and among Giugiaro’s best efforts.

From a few years earlier I wouldn’t mind a Mistral though.

I have been obsessed with the 59 Corvette for most of my life, sweating that I would have one one day. Now that I would have the funds to get one (a bad one), I chicken out. Mostly out of fear of a “never meet your heroes” effect.

Lol I didn’t even notice that!
The rear end reminds me of the Lamborghini Espada.
