2) I can pay by tap on my card, but can’t use a toonie or nickles to pay for it.
Why is the simplest machine such a pain in the arse?

I remember the local Amoco having a “free air” hose sticking out of the side of the building with a simple air chuck on the end of it. Bring your own damn gauge.

I use the Chevron near me because they’re the only station I know that still has free air. Well, the only station until you go out of town.

That’s the plan for when I move. I would suggest the idea to my mum (it’s her car), but she’d never figure out how to use it. Hell, the reason why I fill up the tires and not her is because she doesn’t know how to.

A family friend bought the abandoned Texaco station in my home town to operate a feed sales business out of it. He was the only bidder at the auction and bid $10. The place has 5 service bays and a 2 post lift, plus a 4-car pole barn out back. I offered him $20... Needless to say he didn’t take it.

Well ... here in California free air and water pumps are mandated by law, but they’re sometimes poorly maintained and the pressure gauges don’t work. I bought a tire inflator anyway.

I agree charging for the air seems fair. $1.50 may be a bit steep though. It would depend on run duration, as well as what it costs the station to operate and maintain one of those pumps (including replacing components people damage/steal).

Funny enough, all the gas station air pumps have prices on them by me, but if you go in and ask them to turn it on, they have to by law as it is a safety issue. So you only have to pay if you don’t know to ask.

At one point I remember if you bought gas or something, you can just ask the attendant to turn it on and give you free air. I remember doing it before.
