Bought a new battery. Popped her off. Spotted that my tabs were expired, so I instead spent a while driving around the streets in my neighborhood. LS1 = Wonderful.

I think that qualifies. Why down so long?

There was a shake on the highway, and a weird shaking kind of feeling from a stop. Turns out that it’s the driveshaft center carrier bearing is totally shot. I’ve got the parts, but missing the motivation. It doesn’t help when I have a new truck to drive, that gets better fuel economy every day and I make payments on... of course I’m going to drive that at least most of the time. Too many cars, too little time. I’ve put over 100k miles on her in the time I’ve had her.

Sounds good! No replace the driveshaft guibo and have fun with it! :)

I’ve got the front and rear guibos, the center carrier bearing, and a diff mount insert that I just have never gotten around to installing. I want all that slapped in there!

If you ever get to the point where you’re trying to track down a weird vibration under light to medium acceleration from about 12-20mph, my experience now tells me that it’s most likely the center carrier bearing. When the rubber is all toast and missing in that, it allows the driveshaft to droop enough so that the rear guibo will rub against the ... well, now I forget what it rubs against. But it makes a weird vibration. Also the free-balling driveshaft will make for what feels like an out of balance wheel at highway speeds. (Seriously, it’s like 1-2" of movement up-down that the driveshaft has now, and all the rubber is literally gone.)

Driving for 15 minutes made me realize how much I miss the effortlessness of LS1 acceleration! I only got up to about 3 grand a couple times, too!

Hurry up and install them! It will be getting hot soon.

Thank you for describing that to me. My buddy had the same problem years ago, and described it the same way you did. When mine starts to go bad, I want that high horsepower two piece for dss. I am kind of saving for it, in case when it does happen I won’t be overwhelmed with the cost.

That is what I love about V8s, you don’t need to rev them to go. You can drive them easy, and they have more than enough grunt to move around.

I’ve had mine since February 2008. ;) Not sure how much longer, though. It is such a great car.

Why?! Don’t get rid of it!

Trust me, I never thought I would be saying that either. I’ve got plans that I never did with it, and parts in my basement that I never installed. But this year long sit has made me think that I could get another something to play with. I’ve got too many cars for how much room I have, so I was thinking of consolidating.

That might change when I drive it again. I might be intoxicated by the things she can do... But also, I know there are a lot of things that are limited by the platform, and my truck makes such a good DD (and saves money on gas). And some money to spend on house projects, like a boring adult person which is so not indicative of how old I am, stop it!

Well I can definatley appreciate that. I DD mine and I have a ton of plans that I will get to eventually. Just money and time, which right now are both limited.

Well if you ever get rid of those basement boxes, let us Oppos know. There are a few of us always on the prowl for good parts.

I definitely DD’ed mine for about 8 years, too. Here’s my fuel-up history from day 1. I’ve done many 1000 mile weekends, and only once gotten to the point where I had to give up, park, and walk in a deep layer of unplowed snow.

One thing I’m looking to sell, and just started seeing what the parts cost, is a full Brembo brake upgrade. Brackets, calipers, rotors, pads, lines... I also put a GI thread on the fb sales page, and there is definitely still interest, for my Pedders fast rack and HSV steering wheel. Those are installed right now.

You have the quick steer rack?! I can only find them for the right hand vehicles still avaliable.... That and the wheel I would love!

I just hit 50k miles

Yup, they’ve been impossible to find pretty much ever since they stopped making them. I got lucky, and a friend de-modded before he sold his GTO. I wasn’t gonna pass up that opportunity.

I think I had 50k miles in 2010. That’s cute. ;)

Well I bought my GTO 2 years ago now and found it with 9,700 miles on it, so I do drive it a lot.

Ok, well that’s good to hear! They were meant to be driven! And they take on the miles better than most.

And if you ever get the chance to do a TSD rally (sometimes just called a road rally), do it. The low end torque makes the roads more amazing without having to wind the engine up so you can hit those speed targets super easy. And the additional displays with the trip computers (and the fact it goes to the 100ths, who else does that?) make is freaking awesome, if you’re good at quick math in your head while driving.

When you do get time, you’ve got (in my opinion) one of the best vehicles for it!

10/10 will do. She needs some work though if I was going to track her, but road rally she should be fine.

Brakes, suspension, forced induction, etc

Kinja'd!!! "jdrgoat - Ponticrack?" (jdrgoat)
06/30/2017 at 11:30, STARS: 0

Forced induction? What kind of tracking are we talking about here?

If yours is an LS2 car, at least you already have the better factory brake setup that I upgraded to on mine. And I had mine on the road course (BIR) when I had my factory wimpy brakes. I know I’m no pro and wasn’t anywhere near the limits of the car (especially for threshold braking), but I didn’t have any issues with the wimpy 04 setup.

Yeah I have an ‘06. So yeah the brakes are all rights, but just like suspension it could be better to be able to handle power better. Someday I am planning on a LS9 block at the least if not the full LS9 and build up the HP from there.

Here is my GTO “Lilith”
