Is a $500 Craigslist beater a ticking time bomb, or diamonds in the rough? This guy tries to see what hidden surprises are in this Ford Ranger.

We bought our LeMons Escort for $300. All it needed to be a viable DD was a new heater core and brakes. The rest of the car was in good shape. People just don’t want to work on things to keep them running.

I bought Crusty for $800 knowing that the trans was a time bomb. Everything else worked beautifully. I got 40,000+ miles out of it before having to call it quits. (He’s still alive for now, just very whiny.)

Knowing how to decipher CL code and some mechanical knowledge can net you a decent cheap beater on CL.

(Can’t watch the video because my WiFi is out but I’ll get back to it.)

There’s a certain subset of $500 or less cars that are “better” than others. Someone’s not going to toss a running car cause the heater fan doesn’t work, but if the heater fan isn’t always working and the CEL is on, and suddenly you can’t drive it because the old battery didn’t hold enough charge to start it on a cold day, and you kill it trying and it freezes solid and totally screws it over, so you buy another car cause it has winter tires and is cheaper than putting new winter tires on the old one, so the old one sits until the tires go flat cause no one wants your ugly shitty car that is half-broken and won’t start, but in reality all it needs is a splash of gas, air in the ties, and a fresh battery... Yeah, you might score a winner.
