People who complain about lack of power in the 86 are people who assume it was meant to be the next Supra/GT-R/RX-7 and fail to realize that it’s a damn Celica.

Kinja'd!!!

That’s what it is. So stop complaining, because last I checked Celicas were never speed demons. That is all.

no wait
ALSO
It has a massive aftermarket. It was built for customizers. It’s a Subaru for cryin’ out loud. So stop. Complaining.

Good day sir

The pictured example is awful, but you’re right on the Celica point. I’ve always liked the Celica. The last one wasn’t my favorite but I would’ve driven one

I’ve never really thought about this, but it makes perfect sense.

I got the chance to drive a BRZ for a couple hundred kilometers and just cannot understand how people think the Toyobaru twins are underpowered? Sure, it kinda lacks power at higher speeds on the Autobahn but everywhere else it was the best handling car I’ve ever driven. Also, I’m not trying to sound disrespectful but it seems that only Americans cry about those cars being underpowered despite most states having 55-75 mph speed limits.

They serve their purpose perfectly, its people trying to make the cars into something they aren’t.

So... I agree that the 86 isn’t intended to have power and that it is perfectly fine with the power it has.

But I disagree that it’s a Celica. The Celica was intended to be an inexpensive and compact pony car. It evolved into the Supra (as you almost certainly know) and even in Celica form made some impressive power during certain periods. The mk5 gt4 made 250hp and weighed 3000lbs in a year when the corvette only made 300hp.

The 86 is unique and the closest parallel is a Miata or an rx8 imo. It’s lightweight, has an excellent chassis, and great steering. But it has enough power to not be painfully slow.

Somewhat unrelated to what you’re saying... I disagree with people who say the 86 wouldn’t benefit from more power and tire. No, it doesn’t need power, but I firmly believe it has gobs of potential to handle plenty of power. Longish wheelbase, wide track, great chassis and suspension.

I would personally love to drive one with a 265 square setup and 400hp. But I acknowledge that they are perfectly fine the way they come stock :)

I always thought it was a Celica more than a AE86 Corolla. That said, I still believe Toyota shot itself in the foot for not selling the convertible FR-S. It would be a good alternative to the targa Miata and the 4-cylinder pony cars. They would’ve been able to sell a lot more of them too!

Even more hilarious when you consider the previous top of the line Celica made maybe 180 hp. Same with the Scion TC (4 banger Camry motor). 200hp for a little car sounds good to me.

I agree with pretty much all you said. Doesn’t “inexpensive and compact pony car” apply to both the 86 and the Celica though?

And yeah, on your last point, I actually edited my post for that. The 86 was meant to be modded from the very beginning. I guess I don’t mean everyone is supposed to go full race car with it, but it’s a Subaru, right: it really shines when you get add-ons for it.

That’s my theory anyway, full disclosure I don’t have my license yet so I don’t know anything, hahaha

More like modern day AE86 (hence the name 86). The Scion tC was a Celica.

Otherwise, everything you said is correct. Especially about widebody kits on them. Best car to put one on.

My complaint about the 86 is that it’s not a liftback, like the real AE86.

What if they made a new Supra, but as a trim like the original Supra. But they use Subaru’s H6 motor.

You could buy a Celica in 1992 that had more power than the 86. That’s where 25 years has taken us. What say you?

I can live with low power, and I’m happy it’s RWD. But even compared to some Celicas the 86 comes out losing.

Well, I think for something to be a pony car, you have to have a whole bunch of versions of the car. Part of what makes something a “pony car” in my opinion is offering a lot of options. The Celica could be had in FWD, AWD, NA, Turbo, coupe, convertible, etc. in most generations. The car was designed to suit many needs. The mustang too offers a whole bunch of options for most everyone.

But not the 86. One engine, one body, one intended goal - to make a fun car. Even the terrible marketing for the car is focused around the car’s primary focus.

I will agree that it fills the slot of affordable sports car for Toyota that the Celica’s demise left abandoned though, which I suppose is more than enough evidence to draw a comparison between the 86 and the Celica. I consider myself a Celica supporter, so I have no qualms with the 86 being associated with a Celica. I just feel that the 86 is somewhat in a category of its own.

I hadn’t considered that at all about the options. The original Mustang is kind o the original pony car, and that was well known for its options, so it makes sense. (There should be more AWD Mustangs though.)

That makes sense. And considering the 86 is a new nameplate, maybe it’s best not to compare it to past models at all and just let it do its thing.

I’m not familiar with the Subaru Celica. Was it expensive and at the same time underpowered compared to a family sedan?
