I have arrived in the present, and it is decent.

Kinja'd!!!

Reviews for this product were correct: it is very cheaply made. Particularly the hose, window screen, and anything that actually needs to seal.

But once you fixed those all yourself with some home engineering and about 3 yards of weather stripping, you learn that the actual “cold” part works very well.

Other notes: it weighs over 70 lbs, the hose is too short to use in most windows in your home, the adjustable screen design is asinine depending on your window, and the mounting on the back doesn’t even latch — just falls right out without extra support.

If you are in the market for a lowly portable AC unit, I recommend buying one that is already on display somewhere in the store, so that you may inspect thoroughly. These things are expensive enough and you want to get a good one that you don’t have to dick around with for an extra hour and a half because it utilizes the world’s cheapest plastic.

We’re going to be within shouting distance of triple digits today over on this side of the state and I’m ever so grateful for our central air. Last summer I worked in an office with no A/C and coming home at night to a nice cool house was glorious.

Kinja'd!!!

Picked this up yesterday for $60. My sister is moving to Austin so she’s parting with some stuff. Kept the house below 80 degrees.

We had a Haier floor unit when we lived downtown. Many of the same problems - I had to bodge it together in the window with cardboard and duct tape - but it could drive you out of the room it was so cold. Now this unit in LR cools the entire 600SF pretty well.

Larger units tend to have two exhaust hoses.

We had two different ones from apartment life before we bit the bullet and put in forced air.. they are really good at cooling a room.

Watch for leaks though, they usually have a tray or a drain on the bottom.. ours never got far from a cookie pan and a towel underneath because they always leaked.

If I were moving to Austin, I think a portable air conditioner would be the LAST thing I’d want to get rid of.

600 sq ft? That trumps (PERLITICKS!) my 886 sq ft for smallest dwelling.

Exhaust. Although I question the logic of blowing hot air inches from the intake.

Heat pumps, so somewhat similar. Luckily it’s approx 65 db at full speed and low 50db at lower stages , so our neighbors hopefully don’t hear it. Seattle is set to be 90 today. The Eastside is bound to be much hotter

If we remodel, we’re getting a heat pump. But I need money for remodel. And heat pump.

There are days I consider getting one of these for the garage (which tend to be the days I spent more time in the garage than in the central-air-having house).

Why not use a regular window unit?

Only two windows in our entire (tiny) house are wide enough for a window unit. Window one is actually the rear slider itself, so that’s out. Window two is our bedroom window which faces the street, which is a major security risk (I live in an area where displaying an open window at ground level is “asking for it”).

My old garage had a window ac unit, two ceiling fans, and a small ceiling mounted heating unit. It was fantastic. That garage is the one thing I miss from that house.

I have also considered framing a window unit into the wall. Something to cool it down a bit in the summer would be great. I do have a ceiling fan but I’ve yet to hang it out there.

2 hose is the way to go. otherwise whatever room is next to the draft just gets heated.
