I’m not saying go Wheego Whip on them, but I feel like the range limit, low speeds, and relatively low prices are about right for a first time driver. Plus you get the fun of owning a cheap “exotic.” You could check around for a Wheego LiFe, Fit EV, RAV4 EV, or maybe an i-MiEV, Leaf, 500e, Smart EV...lots of neat stuff that are starting to get low enough in price to just be a buy for the short term.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, weren’t we supposed to be hearing about the revamped Lightning GT this year? I haven’t heard a hum yet...

Come on, bronze the wheels on a purple i-MiEV and you’ll have pretty slick ride!

BMW i3 has been out long enough that I bet you’ll find plenty under $15k before the end of this decade. Low center of gravity, RWD, instant torque, BMW handling, rear hinged doors, and a modern interior. The temptations are going on tour so buy a ticket now.

Or you should teach young drivers to drive and get them something that involves them in the driving experience... instead of just teaching them nothing at all.

If it’s cheap enough, I would consider a Nissan Leaf.

The rest of those you listed are half assed compliance vehicles produced in low volumes which will likely make parts and service difficult as they get old.

The i3 is also incredibly hideous and I wouldn’t be caught dead driving one.

I’m guessing under 15k by the end of this year. I’ve already found some for 19k.

We’ve been looking into a Fiat 500E for my brother’s first car. H doesn’t like them though, so I guess that’s it.

I have a friend that when he has kids, their first cars will be old Jags and Maseratis. Expensive to run, constantly breaking, but beautiful and exotic enough it’s impossible to get mad at them.
