Even if you somehow got the cooling, fuel supply and downforce sorted, how many places on Earth have unbroken stretches of tarmac suitable for averaging a hair under 250 miles per hour (because the game engine isn’t outfitted for handling a car going faster than that)?

How utterly crazy (in a good way) was that part of the game. I remember having a Murcilago and a Pagani both of which would hit 400 kmh, but if you put as much as one tire next to the track they would be completely wrecked

I remember feeling pretty good about this game. Compared to the trash that was Carbon, having jumps that didn’t always go perfectly, track edges that weren’t useable and proper damage felt awesome. It was a big step up at the time.

I think you can do it at the Texas mile thing. That’s probably not what it’s called, but there is an event in Texas every year and I think a turbo’d Ford GT went 240-ish there.

Outside of that, there’s the Bonneville salt flats, and the only race track on earth long enough to let you get to 250 that V.A.G. Owns.

My favorite memory of that game was beating someone online in the top-speed challenge on one of the Autobahn high-speed tracks. He had the DLC McLaren F1 (which was OP as fuck) and I used my trusty but outdated R34 GT-R. Unless you know how to exploit the game’s physics engine with certain cars, the in-game max speed was 250.25 mph.

The F1 flew away at the start and ended up finishing 10 seconds before anyone else. The track (Autobahn B) had 4 checkpoints where your speed was captured, with the highest total being the winner. A fully-modified F1 will easily cruise at 250 mph without touching the nitro. My GT-R would peg the in-game speed limit using nitro but its cruising speed was 225 mph or so. I saved all four of my nitro shots for the checkpoints, making sure to nail each on with the speedo pegged. The McLaren F1 finished with a collective speed of 1000 mph across all four traps.

My GT-R finished with 1001 mph. Another racer in the lobby with a mic immediately went “OHHHH SHIIIIT!” and started laughing. We did a circuit race after that and the player with the F1 brought out another DLC car and made sure I didn’t embarrass him again.

I honestly still load the game up just to fling cars off of the Nevada highway tracks.
