In somewhat of a hipster move I now have an electric motor instead of a traditional gas outboard. My justification is that I love to try new products and I believe trolling motors are currently pathetic technology and torqueedo and similar brushless outboard motors are ridiculously overpriced.

For those of you who dont know much about trolling motors, typical electric motors run about $200 and have ~36-55lbs of thrust. That is under 1hp equivalent. If I were to take the traditional route and get a gas outboard, I could get about 6hp for $300 in a clean used 2 stroke.

In order to get 6hp via name brand electric motor, you would need to spend about $3,500 before batteries, and would still have very limited range compared to a gas motor.

Through my constant scouring of the chinese product market, I found a much more attractive solution. A 5hp (claimed) equivalent electric outboard motor with the body of a traditional gas outboard for only $320 before batteries.

If this thing is even effectively close to 3hp, it will still be a great deal. I am thinking it will push the 14ft raft pretty well, even if a gas motor would have better range and top speed. As much as it sucks, A lot of lakes on the east coast under 1000 acres are electric only.

Itll also be a lot of fun to run on small rivers around me and on small electric lakes where ill be more than doubling the speed of any other boat on the water.

I’d prefer just a smidgen more power, but yours is also a nice setup.

Magazine racer. Tell him to see me from a roll.

Drivers race for sure. You could take him at the AquaX.

AquaX with buoy courses would actually be so fun. Boats have such varied handling characteristics based on hull shape. It would not be a horsepower race at all.

Isn’t that essentially what Jetsprint racing is? Without the buoys.

Wow that looks insanely fun. Autocross is a very affordable Motorsport, this may be one of the least affordable

I remember watching those race on the original Speedvision back in the ‘90s. That channel showed an amazing array of interesting and varied motorsports from around the world when they were new and before the turned into TNN - “The NASCAR Network”.

Those were the days...

Well there are different tiers (that’s a top tier Superboat, which can top 1,000 HP) but it definitely isn’t a run what ya brung type of event. They pull several Gs in corners and roll over a lot.

There was sprint boat racing on SPEED until its last days, and I think they still air it occasionally on some channels.

An electric makes sense for trolling.

Toss on a solar panel to increase range?

I was thinking about that. You can get 12v panel assemblies for ~$150 now and that would get me a lot of extra range on a sunny day. The nice thing about this motor though is that it can run 2 hours on full throttle, which is way faster than a regular trolling motor, but it can also run like 7-9 hours at like 1/4 throttle which is regular trolling speed. So on small lakes where id be electric restricted this thing will be able to hang all day no matter how many times I want to run the shoreline or accross the lake.

I think for longer ranges though ill just pick up a cheap 5hp gas outboard off craigslist. I knew electric wasnt going to replace gas unless I wanted to spend thousands of dollars on batteries and a true 6hp motor. This is just the ultimate trolling motor that will also be able to carry me at reasonable speeds on an electric lake when I need to.

Also, since smaller rivers here are electric only, some trolling motors would not even be able to take 3 people upstream, which defeats the purpose entirely. I wanted to be able to launch and take out at the same spot instead of floating and parking a second car at the take out.

This way I can have near-gas power on electric lakes and rivers, a gas motor for higher speed and bigger lakes, and get to test out a new technology that could save other boaters hundreds of dollars.

Watching all the dads in their bowriders run a course like that would be really funny (and dangerous)

Here it is on the non english site that I found more reviews on. On aliexpress and other english sites it isnt very popular but there are hundreds of reviews on chinese sites. Seems like everybody loves it. Cant go wrong with almost 4hp out of an eectric motor
