Do you have an open air vehicle?

I have realized that I love open air vehicles (convertibles, Jeeps, motorcycles, scooters, etc.). Even when it is 100 degrees, I drive the Sunchaser and Vespa. It has been around 108 all week, and I have not driven either.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

It is like an addiction. A closed, climate-controlled vehicle won’t do it.

I need to get up early tomorrow and go for a ride.

I feel it too. That’s why I wanted a convertible. My only way to get that it my bike.

Kinja'd!!!

Yup! Currently for sale on Ebay for way more than it’s worth.

I miss it and don’t. I was thinking of keeping it today. Then I passed a three vehicle accident scene where the biker was the crap in in a crap sandwich.

Hell yes! I’d go nuts without one.

As it is, that’s what I look forward to most when winter ends.

I have about .7 of an open air vehicle. By which I mean I have a Land Rover which the roof is currently on, but can be taken off (.5), a Lincoln which is a pillarless hardtop (.10), the Ranchero (which I’m converting to have T-tops and open rear cab window but is a way off, .05), and the Galaxie, which is just old-fashioned four windows, two vent windows, firewall vents (.05).

I typically had the hardtop on the Miata for almost every year I’ve owned it. For the past year it’s been hardtop on since it makes it more comfortable for the 100-mile daily commuting I do on interstates and highways. That said, if I find an excuse to pop it off for a weekend, dear goodness, it feels AMAZING .

I have one open air motor vehicle, my Miata, although I didn’t buy it because it’s open air. (Mind you, I still do put the top down when I drive it, but...)

Pillar less hardtops are underrated when it comes to open air driving. The world needs more of them.

Well, right now the Ranchero does not have the roof at all, nor the rear cab window, so...

Actually surprisingly low on straight-through-into-passenger-compartment holes at present.

Oh, I do, but

I live in Florida

I worked out-of-doors in this Hell-state for over 25 years including those five-month Florida summers

Fuck

Can’t take it no more

Man I’m too old for this shit

so anyway when I finally got sick of duck-taping my leaky original top I got a top with a rear window you can unzip so you can drive out in the air but with shade.

Hey, how hard is it to take the top down or put it back up on that super-classy ride you’ve got? Mine takes about two seconds down, four seconds up. I have to admit you’re way on top in terms of style but that top looks pretty tricky.

Regrettably the Galaxie is not a four door Victoria - aka four-door pillarless:

Kinja'd!!!

The Lincoln, if it were a Continental and not a Lincoln model, would have a rear breezeway window and be *totally* open-air, but as-is it just has wraparound rear glass.

Yup. I keep the Miata top-down 99% of the time, even when it’s 114 F out. I don’t have much traffic on my commute, which means I’m going fast enough to keep the cabin cool.

I did get stuck in traffic once this week. It was only 88F but 7 am, so the sun was right on my face the whole time. Really glad I wore sunblock that day.

Can confirm: no feeling in life quite so satisfying as dropping that Jeep top on a nice day. Especially if it’s a nice day in a rainy/cold spring and it clears up and gets into the high 60s or into the 70s!

Growing up, a neighbor had a Mercury with the breezeway. I thought that was freaking awesome.

You can get the same thing in most any old convertible, too — just unzip the rear window and roll down the windows.

The sheet metal is almost identical between the Lincolns and the Conti - I have the short version of the behind-window filler, Contis have the long version. That in place, lifting out the parcel shelf, and using the Conti trim and glass, and it wouldn’t be hard to convert, but you’d need a donor, and the wraparound *is* nice as well.

Not quite the canyon carver the HEMIWagon has turned into, but still very enjoyable. I’ve been known to drop the top if it’s relatively warm out. That includes warm days in January and February. 37F? Decently warm compared to 20F!

I used to have my Jeep. It was a blast. Never had the top or the doors on. Even in the dead of winter. Rain? Just threw on the bikini top. I miss having an open top. I can’t wait to get the Healey done.
