Why do drifters buy nice tires?

I mean, having grip in the front, sure. If yer just wasting the rears, why spend all that coin? Also doesn’t grip work against the ability to step the rear out?

in order to maintain control when in a high-speed drift you need high quality tires. It may seem counter-intuitive at first, but think of it this way: If you go out on a race track with shitty tires, how fast is your lap going to be and/or how poor will your control be? Now spin that shitty tire up to smoke and think about how much worse its going to get... Hence why drifters destroy good tires. The *low* speeds and power required to drift with the lame-ass Prius tires fitted to thr BRZ/gt86/whatever Toyota is calling these days... Are o e of the main reasons for thier selection (Making the car easy to drift despite not having much power or being terribly fast). If you have a powerful car you plan on drifting at high speed (not a Toyobaru) you need tires that can handle the power and speed.

The Formula Drift cars are actually accelerating even when they’re drifting, so they need those sticky tires. A surefire way to be competitive in FD is to have as much grip and power as possible. It narrows the margin that allows room for error, at the tradeoff of being able to rip high-speed, high-angle drifts.

Good tires are much more predictable and controllable than cheap tires.

Cheap tires can get “greasy” when they get hot.

*Good* drifters buy nice tires. When you know what you’re doing and are competing, predictable grip and and breakaway is key. Cheap shit tires can just turn into ice cubes when hot, they’ll be all over the place. Hard to park your car on another guy’s door in a cloud of smoke when you can’t trust your tires.

Disclaimer: I am not a good drifter. I am a mediocre powerslider at best.
