Kinja'd!!!

The radiator fan on the mower shattered a while back. Do I order a $50 replacement? Heck no! I tear apart an $8 box fan, scavenge the blade, drill out the hub and bolt that sucker straight to the pulley.

Works like a charm!

Heck yeah!

I’ve done similar repairs to items I’ve received for free. One of my favorites was a very large wine cooler (30-40 bottles) with a malfunctioning fan that let out a screech that could raise the dead (it did wake me up several times, in a such a way that my heart was pounding, and I’m a pretty heavy sleeper).

A simple replacement with a high-quality AC fan pulled from an old equipment rack did the trick. When running it’s a little louder than stock, but it’s a pleasant mechanical sound and not the usual sound of soon-to-fail cheap Chinese components pre-death throe...

Damn! 30-40 bottles? That’s a lot of wine!

I had a shot at a “bone freezer” from work and blew it. It worked but couldn’t get to -70F. It would hold -68 constant but couldn’t meet standard. It sat in the shop for three weeks. Then they put it out for scrap the same day the junker came. Buggers!

I mostly drink reds, so the cooler was kind of pointless for wine. I just cranked the temperature down and used it as a spare fridge until I decided to save the electricity and walk the extra 20 ft. to the primary refrigerator.

I seem to be the opposite of my parents. They have a Sub Zero side-by-side in the kitchen that they regret buying, so there’s a conventional fridge down in the garage for holding things that don’t fit in the kitchen (and the bulk stuff from Costco). In the kitchen is another fridge for drinks and condiments (and stinky things like kimchi). No fridge in the bar area, but that bar has never really been used in the 37 years they’ve lived in that house. Two people and three refrigerators. Good thing that they have lots of solar panels...

I’m right with you. The first floor “shop” keeps a perfect temp for cheapish Reds and my Keystones.

My parents are a bit like yours. One fridge and two chest freezers. That’s a lot of electricity being pulled.

Me? I like shopping fresh. I shop every night after work.

My fridge!
