Kinja'd!!!

Just like the #7 Toyota TS050 at Le Mans, my Toyota MR2 is having clutch issues. Will this be an easy fix or should I prepare for headaches?

As of this morning, the car allows me to go into gear when it’s not running, but doesn’t let me use any of the gears with the engine running, even with the clutch pedal pressed all the way. I’m making sure to start it in neutral such that I don’t burn the clutch if it isn’t fully disengaging.

Kinja'd!!!

According to google, it’s most likely the clutch master or slave cylinder, or just the clutch itself. For all I know, this is the original clutch from 1991.

Any advice for what I can do to diagnose the issue further, and learn to fix it, would be greatly appreciated. Faster Honda cousin for your time:

It certainly sounds like a cylinder issue. Typically, you’d notice some slipping of a failing clutch before it totally blows unless you do it by totally screwing up a shift. Is there any fluid under the car? When my slave went out it barfed fluid and it was pretty obvious. Also, remember these systems typically use brake fluid which is pretty nasty stuff that strips paint, so you want to clean it up ASAP if it is leaking. Honestly, if you can’t be sure the clutch isn’t less than 10 year old I would replace the entire system: master, slave, fork, plate and clutch disk. I’ve never seen th system on an MR-2 specifically, but I can’t imagine it’s too bad. Worst part, IMO is hooking the master back up to the pedal. Bleeding kinda sucks too but with two people or a vacuum blended it’s easy.

I’m guessing the intent was #3, but I’m not ruling #4 out.

As for the uncooperative clutch, I’d be checking the hydraulic system for leaks/fluid levels first. Fresh fluid and a new slave and/or master cylinder may also do the trick. Did it give you any notice, or was it a “parked one night, broke next morning” situation?

It gave zero notice, just wouldn’t go into gear as of this morning. Was running as usual (read: very well) yesterday. I’ll take a look at the fluid levels and see what I can find!

No fluid under the car, maybe there could be an internal leak? I’ll have to figure out where the clutch cylinders are, once I do I’ll check the system for leaks. Thank you for the advice! Here’s hoping I’ll have it fully diagnosed soon.

It could be a blown seal in around one of the cylinder pistons too. In that case the fluid could stay in the system but not be able to build enough pressure to disengage to clutch. I’ve seen that happen once, but it made the pedal do weird things like either be hard to press and/or stick to the floor after you press it in.

Sounds like a small leak. I’ve never had a hydraulic leak that was bad enough it’d show on the floor. It normally just runs along something and I guess drys or burns up. For practical purposes it might not be losing fluid, but the loss of pressure is what’s making it not work.

Syncros would be much cheaper. Because you don’t need them if you time your shifts right :p

There was a Click and Clack rerun last weekend with a similar question. Their diagnosis was a dead clutch. I’d still check the master/slave cylinders before calling that gospel.

Ok if you’re having clutch issues in the Toyota, you need to ensure you’ve got the pit lane speed limiter on and you’re in hybrid drive mode, that way the ICE will turn on safely without clutch damage. Alternatively, you may have damaged a linkage due to contact or tyre damage that isn’t allowing you to change gear-

Oh this isn’t an LMP1. Well I’ve no clue then.
