So I have a large record collection, but only a crappy record player. I’ve spent a lot of time collecting records, but never really got around to the buying a good turntable part. Do any of your weirdos have any recommendations?

I have only one requirement, and that’s that it can play 78s, because those make up half of my collection.

The AudioTechnicas have great reviews on Amazon and aren’t insultingly expensive.

I have a basic AudioTechnica turntable that I got my wife for her birthday last year. She was on this kick about wanting to listen to records, so I got it for her, and she was happy.

I can’t comment on how good of a record player it is though, because we’ve yet to play a record on it.

Sadly, the ones under $300 don’t play 78s. Which I’m not completely opposed to, but I sort of feel like that cost is coming from the fact that they’re “direct drive” and I don’t even know what that is.

Direct drive = not belt drive. It’s like comparing a tesla to an escort. Motor straight to table.

I would say look at the features you want (e.g., how much pitch adjustment you want, is it preamped, etc.) and get a good brand. I’ve never really gotten into hifi vinyl but those that do say the turntable is only a part of the overall equation. Save money for decent cables and amps and stuff.

Bless you.

In that case, I definitely don’t want to pay $200 more for a direct drive.

please tell me you have Brubeck “Time Out” and Herb Alpert. My dad regrets selling his records when I was young. All he has is a record from Bread (ew).

I have a Denon DP300f, which is pretty reasonably priced, and fully automatic. If you get serious you can also swap the cartridges and bypass the internal pre-amp as well. Basically its good for both beginners and the mid-level users.

Edit: Sorry just realized it doesn’t play 78s

And it does 78s! I think we have a winner.

Sadly not. I like Take five well enough, but despite loving jazz, I’ve never been huge on Dave Brubeck.

It is not the top audiophile best, but it sounds pretty damn good to my ears and is belt driven which in my experience makes 78s sound better as they tend to pick up direct drive vibration more than 33s.

I’ve read the best budget hifi turntable (and that really depends on you having a good sound system to back it up) is a Flexson VinylPlay, but that’s about $300. The Audio Technica LP60 is probably the best sub-$100 turntable but it doesn’t place 78rpm records.

I’ve come to appreciate it more after playing Blue Rondo a la Turk on alto back in hs. Its a time signature mashup and articulation exercise.

I got a Audio Technica... I think its the PL120. Awesome first turntable. The pre amp kind of sucks, but I run it through a dbx sonic maximizer into a set of powered studio monitors and it sounds great. When you want better quality sound you can add a rubber mat to the platter a upgraded counter weight and an upgraded cartridge. I have the Sure m97xe with the upgraded stylus, and holy shit the detail that thing picks up is amazing (my Steely Dan albums just blow me away with detail). Just remember that you do not want to play your damaged vinyl on it (if you want to keep your new vinyl nice), and clean your records every time you switch records. Buy a cleaning kit right away.

...and remember, a lot of the stuff I or anyone else is probably telling you won’t make sense until you hear the difference between turntables and stylus or cartridge yourself.

Sadly, it seems that they don’t make that model anymore. But the other advice is great, thanks!

Then look for something upgrade-able. Then it can start as a cheap turn-table and if you really want to dig further, you can upgrade it and make it as nice as one of those $800 dollar ones. Stay away from something old that needs fixing as your first one. Some have no market for upgrades and some have tons of stuff available.

That’s very good advice, because I keep getting tempted by old Victrolas.

My advice would be to get something that’s better than your speakers and/or amp setup. That way if you want even better sound, you just need a better amp and/or speakers. If you already have a really good amp and speakers, even better.

Also, nice belt drive > cheap direct drive, but inmho, nice direct drive > nice belt drive. I have a Sansui SR-929, which is direct drive. They’re also rare and expensive, and hard to repair, so I’m not sure I’d reccomend it.

Oh and Ortofon makes really good cartridges for not too much money. I have an old Pickering, but I’ve heard very good things about Ortofons, the Red in particular.
