I am pretty okay with what I’ve gotten so far, I tend to stay away from the raw fish.

Depends on the store - the nicer ones around here (Chicago burbs) actually have halfway decent sushi, shockingly.

This roll came from a Safeway, which is one of the nicer stores around here. They tell me it comes in fresh daily. So far so good.

My store sells fresh sushi made daily by professional sushi chefs. It’s restaurant quality.

I feel like sushi is one of those things that you can look over and get a decent idea of how fresh it is. Shiny = good. And yes, I know there are tricks to mask that, but still...

its my opinion that it doesn’t matter which one you get...its going to taste the same and be about the same price as a cheaper sushi place with flavor.

That’s what the store told me too. I really like it.

Our is about 2/3 the price of a restaurant and about 2/3 as good. You just can ’ t get the rice to the right level of stickiness after it ’ s been in the refrigerator for a while. I have no safety concerns, our guy is at least as good as the restaurant people and the fish is quality.

EDIT: Publix, a SE grocery chain that’s among the nicer store brands nationwide. I don’t know if I’d buy sushi from a Safeway or even a Kroger. And definitely not Walmart.

There is great variability in the quality. Some of the fancier grocery stores near me make it on site and it’s pretty decent. Others make it at their own central comissary, and one place has it from some random pre-made sushi vendor.

Well our local sushi in MT is marginal at best. Grocery store sushi might be better than what I’ve had here in MT. Not even close to what I get in California bay area.

Our local restaurants do not produce very good sushi so grocery store is about as good as it gets. You are in beef country up here.

I get it pretty often. Not a ton of variety usually except on the weekends. I got a bad piece of tuna once and couldn’t eat any sushi for a while. Didn’t get sick. Just noticed when I bit in. The rolls were fine, it was just one piece of nigiri.

I love a good cut of beef in sushi...I’m not even much a fan of fish to begin with, so if they went all-beef, I’d be good with that.

The stores we frequent have special sushi counters where the chefs are making it right in front of the customers. Replace the refrigerated display cases with a counter and it would be a sushi bar. Customers can even request special rolls and they will make it on demand.

Stop & Shop. Basically, an outside franchise (ACE Sushi) rents kitchen and shelf space in the store and provides their own chefs to make the goods. The chefs work in our store but are not on our payroll. The store sells the sushi for them and the profits are divvied up accordingly.

Its sort of the same setup as a vendor like Lays or Coke but the product is made at the store rather than being delivered.

I won’t eat any rolls that have raw anything from a grocery store. Unless it’s a store like Wegman’s where the guys are making the rolls right behind the display case.

I even get the raw fish every once in a while. My biggest gripe is that the raw fish usually flavorless. It’s not much cheaper around me to get grocery store sushi over a nice restaurant unfortunately

It’s alright. I eat it every once in a while if I’m alone. I don’t want to go into a restaurant solo. I usually get the spicy salmon/tuna to play it safe.

Actual fish? Case by case basis.

Not raw at all...perfectly cooked however you like, then thinly sliced into rolls (with whatever else you like). My wife eats 0% raw sushi, I eat about 30% raw.

Wegmans is usually pretty good (although I did get food poisoning from it once, but, hey, realistically, that can happen pretty much anywhere). They have a counter with an actual chef making it fresh, so it really isn’t any different that getting it in a restaurant.

The stuff that comes in on a truck premade, I wouldn’t touch. Might as well eat a sandwich from a gas station vending machine.

Consider yourself very lucky then. I live in northwest montana, there are 0 good to average sushi places within 300 miles of where I live.

When I was in California i would never consider grocery store sushi. Even getto sushi is better (fresher).

I’ve been known to go for the grocery store sushi. Most claim it’s made fresh in store.

I’ve even done the raw fish, never had a problem there. But then I’ve got a pretty healthy immune system. Ate more than my share of dirt as a kid.
