Because none of you want to admit it.

Frank Sintra just wasn’t as good after he left the Dorsey band. Was No One Cares a good album? Of course. So was the duet album with Tom jobim. But largely? Frank didn’t even make an effort after the Dorseys and he just talked his way through really over-orchestrated shit.

If you think his later music was bad, go watch one of his movies.

I will stand behind The Manchurian Candidate and Tony Rome.

Fun fact: In an alternate universe, there’s a version of Die Hard that stars Sinatra. I want to live in that universe.

I LOVE the Manchurian Candidate.

In spite of his acting.

I’m not sure that I’d say we’re all thinking that, considering the large contingent of Oppos who were born after he died, and the even larger contingent (myself included) who were born while he was still alive but lump Sinatra into the category of “music my grandparents listened to.”

I appreciate Frank Sinatra, but truthfully I’ll take “Frank Sinatra” by Cake over any song that the man himself put out.

Assignment for your next post: write that screenplay, or at least rewrite the memorable quotes for Blue Eyes.

Interior: elevator door opens. The body of a dead German sits in an office chair. A sign around his neck reads:

“Ring-a-ding-ding, mother fucker, now I have a machine gun”

Sintra died in 1998. No one born in 1999 is old enough to driv...

You’ve ruined my day.

The whole thing only works if he stays anonymous to the end, because the second the Germans find out who they’re fucking with, they’ll be outta there. No one messes with the Sicilians.

One of my favorite stories goes like this:

Don Rickles was in a restaurant and Frank Sinatra was eating there. So he goes up to him and says “there’s a girl I’m trying to impress. Can you stop by the table and say hi?”

So Sinatra goes up to the table and says “Hi Don.” And Rickles goes “Frank, can’t you see I’m eating here? Get lost.”

That wasn’t my intent, but at least you can go home and legally enjoy an adult beverage, unlike everyone born after Sinatra died.

You should - it’s truly a great movie, particularly when you consider that it came out around the time of the Cuban Missile crisis, when everyone was paranoid. Sinatra overacts (of course), but I highly recommend it.

Sad Sinatra is the best Sinatra. It’s why I think some of his best recordings were with Jobim.

Oh, I see. Well it did seem to fit the scene of you pondering about the passage of time etc. Also it is one of the very few Sinatra songs (I don’t mean it’s his, just that he used to sing it) which in fact is liked by people who don’t enjoy Sinatra at all.

I quite like it – but I heard Jobim’s Insensatez before I ever heard Sinatra’s version with Jobim so my perception is slightly different.

Besides a) I know next to nothing about music and b) not that much about Frankie either.

Same here, though. I’m a huge Jobim fan, but I think that, in contrast to most of his stuff, Sinatra really put an effort into the Jobim songs.

My take is: when he started doing the whole bossa nova - Brazilian thing he found it to be something different – maybe a new challenge, even – and either consciously or unconsciously, when performing he was less of his usual “big man Sinatra persona” .

When he sang his usual past repertoire he knew he could get away with anything, of course.

I love their dynamic. Apparently Rickles first met Sintra in Vegas. He saw him and did a set on him. I don’t think anyone but Rickles would have had the balls to screw with Sinatra.
