Really fine older gentleman ; I’d see him regularly at Wendy’s with his wife having lunch. He owned two Samurais, and owned some classic Fords in the past, including a Sunliner. I used to talk about my projects with Dennis - he had worked in a dealership. Just sad to hear he’s gone, that’s all.

Bummer,

that’s the worst part of joining the local Ham radio club.. Average age is 80 something.. Every meeting you’re scared to ask where people are.

LJ80 for your friend;

I didn’t even go looking for his obit on purpose, I was looking for one for a local WWII vet. I hadn’t seen him in around five-six months, though he only passed away two weeks ago. Just the kind of guy who really cared deeply about everyone - I and probably a hundred others were “young man” to him as a term of respect.

That’s a bummer, Dennis sounds like a great guy. I have a couple of elderly clients who come in as much to talk old cars as anything else, and they’re frail enough that I’m starting to wonder if each time I see them is the last. So I make a point to spend time talking to them. Lots to learn from guys like that.

Dennis was rail thin, and really did look like an Elvis impersonator. Not wildly unhealthy, but as you say, frail. I didn’t always cross schedules with him - since his usual dining time was around 2 in the afternoon - but I sometimes made my lunch decisions based on “maybe Dennis is in at Wendy’s”.

I’d been meaning to try to cross paths with him again, but the Wendy’s was down for renovation for a couple months, and I haven’t been eating out as often as usual. Missed my chance.

I know a guy getting up there. His wife gets around in a wheelchair he pushes. Well, used to push more. They aren’t leaving the house as much. He worked on cars for years, even after he retired he’d still work on cars. He’s given me some good advice and we had some good car talk. He’s an old Dutch guy, so conversations with him about European cars is super fun. I value his knowledge and will be sad when his time is up.

There’s a lady in my church who is kind of frail and in her 60s, but used to be a mechanic and still rebuilds engines for projects on a regular basis. She has a ‘57 Crown Victoria, which, sadly, is moldering a bit. I make a point of “knowledge sponge”ing around her.

There’s a lady in my church that is 85, daily drives a stick NB Miata, and skis black diamond.

The mechanic lady in my church dailies a 90s Mustang. Have not confirmed stick - probably not. The ‘57 Ford, she purportedly put nearly 400,000 miles on.

She might be less frail if she had family to stay active with, but the rest of her family is, to put it bluntly, not physically active.

Drop the family a little condolence card. When my Dad past away the people at the post office and his local diner sent cards with a nice note on how they’ll miss him. It was nice and heartfelt.
