*Applicable to Ontario only*
This is just an LCBO strike, the Beer Store is privately owned with gov’t oversight, as of last year sometime we can get beer and cider in select grocery stores, and there’s always the option of going to the producer.
But for wine or liquor by far the most convenient option is LCBO.

Our commie, state run booze store works great for the most part... Largest booze buyer in the world etc, gets good selection—and it’s great for those who get their product in it, too. Getting your stuff in the LCBO is a mark of quality.
With that out of the way, that also means total control over pricing. Meh.
At least there’s still the beer store or buying direct. Less convenient but oh well

My girlfriend losses her shit every time we shop at Meijer on this side of the border because of how cheap everything is. She even shops at No Frills.

Blue laws make no sense to me. They always struck me as someone just out to make things as difficult as possible for someone else because they want the world to exist in their own view.

The state where I lived left the booze business via voter mandate - a lot easier now, although I don’t know if the drastic price reductions that some assumed would happen actually became real.

In a state like California, you can walk into a supermarket buy beer, liquor, wine, and your normal food. When I went to Tennessee, liquor and beer could not be sold at the same store. And liquor stores couldn’t be open on Sundays. Because people don’t have things like “cabinets” and “shelves” that can store alcohol at home for consumption on the sabbath I guess. In Virginia I can get beer and wine at a grocery store, but liquor only at state run stores. Even bars have to make 45% of their revenue from food sales.
For the love of god, the Jack Daniels refinery exists in a dry county!

I was going to use this as an opportunity to bitch about Oklahoma (out of habit) but, weirdly, we’re in the process of “modernizing” our liquor laws.
At the moment, you can only buy liquor, wine, and beer in a liquor store. It cannot be chilled, and that store may only sell liquor, wine, and/ or beer. They cannot sell anything else. Mixers: no. Fruit: no! Toothpicks: NOPE. Also the liquor store must be owned a a person, not a corporation, and a person can only own one liquor store. They can be open no longer than 10AM to 9PM and never on Sundays.
Stores that are not liquor stores can sell cold beer (and only beer) but it has to be 3.2% ABW (yes, ABW not ABV).
Luckily, we’ve successfully passed legislation to change a lot of that. Grocery stores can sell “strong beer” and wine in 2018 and liquor stores can start selling cold stuff then too. Also looks like we’re managed to eek out an hours extension (can be open until 12!) and sales on Sunday by county.
I guess if we can’t have infrastructure, human rights, or education they’ll just give us more booze to shut us up.

Nope. Not because of any laws about selling on specific days either. There’s just the LCBO for a proper liquor store. There is still the Beer Store because it’s privately owned and wouldn’t be affected by this strike, or buying straight from the brewery/winery/distillery... but LCBO is by far the most convenient.

It’s a semi-monopoly... in that there ARE other options but they all run through the LCBO in one way or another because in addition to the retail side they are the people in charge of booze in Ontario... but they don’t close on Sundays and don’t dictate selling times for anyone else either outside of “bars can’t sell before X or after Y” afaik. And those hours are pretty long... if they seriously impact your life you have bigger issues.
Fun fact--they will adjust those hours for Olympic hockey in different time zones :)
