W - Double U.

U is a vowel. Doubling it should not affect its designation. W should be a vowel. Who decided it was a consonant?

Real talk here
The French call it “double vé”, for double-V, I think they have that figured out

Man, you don’t know the can of worms you have just opened...

First of all, there is a difference betweeen “letters” and “sounds”.

Second, what we call those “letters” does not necessarily relate to what they are, were, or how they are (or were) pronounced.

Suffice to say that the Latin alphabet did not really make a distinction between the letters u and v , for example (hint: they had the same sound). Which is why the Romans wrote, say, “SPARTACUS” this way: “SPARTACVS”.

U and V as sepparate “letters” did not happen until much later.

Have a look here.

Why not just say Folks-vahgen? I’m from Poland and we don’t say V-W individually. makes no sense

But the Jerries do.

Also, you are expecting all English speakers to be aware of the fact that V-, in German, sounds exactly the same as an “F”

I understand what you’re saying, but English alphabet contains letter W which is designated as a consonant. When you say the letter - double U, you would think letter U is being doubled - UU. If U is a vowel, what makes W a consonant.

Don’t even get me started on the sometimey bitch Y

That didn’t really explain it. I mean, in Spanish, it’s even pronounced “doble ve” not “doble oo”

Also, it’s written as two V’s, so it’s doublevee from now on.

Also also, wikipedia is fake news.

In most of the Spanish-speaking world. Try Chile, for instance: they say “doble u” (that also happens in some other Latin American countries but cannot remember which ones; incidentally, in Peninsular Spanish it is called “doble uve”.)

The relationship between the way W is represented and the way W is traditionally called does not have to appear evident to people in the 21st century. I suggest you have a look at how the Latin alphabet evolved (in particular, its usage in the English language)...

In English, W is a “consonant” letter assigned to a particular sound which is much closer to a vowel than you think! That’s the reason why the phoneme /w/, usually expressed in English with a letter W (as in “water”) is called a semivowel.

Forget about W, why do we have C when we have S and K? Because English is nothing more than a bastardized collection of every other language on Earth.

I like languages like Russian. There are rules. There are some exceptions to rules, but overall, it makes sense. There are some quirks like soft sign and hard sign, but once you know how they are used, it again makes sense.

I’ve been trying to teach my wife a bit. So I’ve been paying attention to how English works and it just makes no sense.

A scholar in Romance languages said once (not jokingly) that we are lucky we have so much Latin material: Modern English is so full of Romance vocabulary and structures that otherwise it would be very difficult to realise it is in fact a Germanic language.

For a completely crazy mix-up of languages I suggest you look up “Maltese”. Farsi (an Indoeuropean language, just like English, Russian or Italian, but written in the Persian version of Arabic) is also an interesting concoction.

Yeah, I hate the English alphabet sometimes.

We really don’t need to have the letter C , or X for that matter. And why do E and F have almost the same shape when they have nothing else in common? At least the similarities between B and P make sense.

Learning another language is easiest if you practice it daily. If you sit in front of your computer for few hours a day and then go back to your natural language, you instantly forget everything you learned.

I was in Upper Silesia (Katowice area). One night hanging out with a few friends, they were trying to explain some language differences unique to Silesia, but we were about 30 Zubr’s deep that evening, and all of us speaking a drunken blend of Polish and English, so I didn’t get all of it :)
