Kinja'd!!!

After 2 years, I finally convinced the lady a bike would be a good idea for us. Now for several reasons, we want a street legal dirt bike, I have some dirt bike expirence, although I am really far from an expert. I’m partial to kawasakis, and I’d love to find something similar looking to the above, under $2k and no bigger than a 350, motor Wise. So all that said, what am I looking at, here? What are my options?

When you say “good for us” are you implying riding 2-up on it? Cuz a bike like that is less than ideal...

KLR250 would meet your requirements. Probably won’t find one for under 2k though. There’s also DRZ350, Can’t remember yamaha’s dual sport name right now.

ehhh, realistically, not much. kawasaki had the KLR 250 out for a while, but I dont recall them selling particularly well.

honda has the CFR250L, but too new/out of price range. same with yamahas wr250X

you might be able to find a suzuki DRZ 400 or 200. expect it to be kinda beat at 2K though.

Light, simple, slow but not to the point that it would be too dangerous to ride around town.

This looks like it might fit the bill.

I’ve only ever ridden 2 stroke (non road legal) Kawasakis. I’m partial to the Suzuki DRZs which can sometimes be had around the same price but are usually pretty shook.

I guess it depends on the town. If you’re not doing many highway miles then sure, a dirt bike will work and will be fun, but either way my suggestion would be to stick to the higher end of your CC range. Riding 2-up on my girlfriend’s CBR250 is already asking a lot of that little engine and dirt bikes have lower gearing on top of that.

Under $2k on a dual sport is going to be rough or 20+ years old.

You can get street bikes that cheap, but dual sports are a smaller market, and require more upkeep, so people want to get more back.

Why not just buy an actual bike?

I’ve had several friends buy Ninja 500s and learn to ride with them. I even started on a 500 Ninja.

They’re cheap, plentiful and relatively easy to work on. Plus there already street legal and can deal with 2 riders.

Plus you really have to rev it to feel any power out of them. Like 7-8k and up.

If you get one, look for 94 and up. 88-93 are different. I bought one a few weeks ago for 300 bucks it need ALOT of work. Just sold it for 1400 and made 300ish bucks.

Plus you get your Kawasaki.

Just from memory, rear brake pads are like 35. A Chain is 80, the rear sprocket is 25. There’s body panels all over Ebay in various colors. Tires are about 100 for a good brand. I bought most of my parts to fix the one I sold from the Kawie dealer. Just because it was the closest moto shop near me.

The Ninjas also just use the motor oil for it all. Trans, engine, wet clutch. All 3.8 quarts of oil.

Plus theyre cheap to insure. Multiple friends who owned them had them insured for the year with Geico or Progressive for right at 100.

If your former military or your wife is, Harley is offering a $100 motorcycle course for newbs. Riding their bikes. Or 325 for the advanced class. If it’s like my state, it serves as the motorcycle test if you take your class paperwork in within 90 days of completion.

500 Ninjas arent fast. My CBR1000 is fast, Ninja 500s are good starter bikes and you can keep it for a while because its not a 250.

If you can CRF230L, slow SOB but it can be had pretty cheap cuz they made them for quite a while with no changes. Honda recently released the CRF250L which will be well out of your price range for any example you’d want.

I want to be able to explore the pine barrens on it, so a street bike is out.

Haha when I saw the pic I thought “damn that’s almost the same bike as your header image.” If you’re south jersey, Pottstown isn’t too terribly far.

I’m in Long Branch, but I know people with trucks who’d be more than willing to help.

I’m late to this but if you can get a yamaha TW200, you’ll enjoy it. It’s not fast enough for highway use, but it’ll do 60 just fine. Big tires = can do sandy terrain no problem. It’s short, easy to ride, about as fast as a grom, but 100x more capable off road. They’ve been around for almost 30 years so a used one from the late 90s would be well in budget + a bit extra for gear or cosmetics or what have you.
