which gave it up first, the spin lock, or the crosspin?

There’s so much carnage and destruction in there it’s hard to tell. I originally figured the cross pin came loose ans slid out, but the retaining bolt is still firmly attached to the chunk of the carrier it was supposed to be in. There were no warning signs and I was just gently leaving my neighborhood when it happened.

How the fuck... didn’t you just buy this?

This is the one I replaced about a month back on my ‘99 Suburban. It’s a big part of the reason I want to ditch the half ton and get a 3/4 ton. I’ve broken stuff before, but never this spectacularly, and never gently pulling out of my neighborhood while leisurely accelerating up to 25 mph.

my GM diff exploded going low speeds back in 2003.

considering how much i was travelling back then i’m glad it didn’t shit the bed when i was in the middle of nowhere

Yes. Our 96 G3500 1000 passenger van with the 5000 bolt axle (ok really like 14) will recommend you upgrade too. All GM vehicles have some thing about them that is an issue at some point though, our van always hated to actually run (ongoing throttle body injection crap) and we’ve had issues getting the 4L80 to shift too which we recently fixed due to a wiring issue, and the gas tank never seems to stay full when we drive it lol.

That does look really fun though. Nothing like the dead weight of a stranded full size vehicle.

Please stahp. I don’t want to think about my 10 bolt.

One day when I have money I’ll have a 1500HD six lug 14 bolt in the garage waiting for this to happen.

I have a G80.

Here’s hoping they made some changes between ‘99 and ‘10.

G80s develop cracks in the carrier near the crosspin and this is generally what they look like when they let go. It may be inherent to how the G80 functions. Theory goes something like this: when drivers stay hammer down (one-wheel peel) through the locking sequence (so say way over the 100-150rpm wheel speed differential required to engage the pawls), the G80 engages really hard which shock loads the carrier.

You don’t have to ditch the 1/2 ‘Burb. You can get a same width 14bolt semi-floater which comes with the six lug axles. The light duty 2500 GMT400s have these (sub 8800? GVWR trucks). It’s not much too much work to drop in place of the 10bolt. Make sure you get the right width rear. There’s a bunch of little crap (conversion u-joint info, u-bolts, axle breathers, etc) so it’s easier to c/p someone else’s work:

Yeah, makes sense. I’d bet the gov-lock only costs $2 to produce.

Oh man. You have one of those malfunctioning gas tanks too!? I just can’t figure out why mine won’t stay full either, it’s really weird.

This happened 4 days before I drove from Portland to Las Vegas. I’m sure glad it didn’t happen in the middle of a vast expanse of nothingness along the way!

That explains it. I sure don’t want to keep dumping money into this thing, so I don’t foresee a 14 bolt in its future.

Considering the G80 is still being dropped into GM trucks today, have they improved upon it at all? Are the newer ones more robust?
