I decided to see how well my phone picks up engine/exhaust noise

It doesn’t do a very good job. I was going to make a short driving video of the Raider, but the audio in this test is super weird. It’s picking up the sounds of the pedals shockingly well, and even cars going by and random people talking, but not so much engine and exhaust. I’ve got a phone mount that I might try and rig up and see if having the phone higher up improves anything.

What I did to get around that was to buy this mic . It’s on a long cable, and when plugged into the headphone jack the phone will record audio through it when you take a video. I run the mic down to the passenger footwell and clip it to the side of the trans tunnel or bottom of the dash. It picks up nothing but engine noise.

That’s really cool. I wish it wasn’t currently unavailable, but I’ll have to find somewhere else to get it, or something equivalent.

I find the microphones that dangle from the rear of cars at autocross events amusing, but that’s the way to get good exhaust audio, apparently.
