Just took the Grom on a quick trip to the store and thought the chain or something sounded kind of loud particularly when coasting down a hill in gear. When I got back I took it for a quick spin down the street sans helmet, and it seems like the chain makes a lot of noise? I’m not sure as I never ride without a helmet. It’s been a half dozen or so rides since I’ve lubed the chain, and I got caught in the rain yesterday. Still it seemed loud. Am I nuts or what?

Grom chains are kind of loud, it’s a non oring chain so it’ll always be a bit louder than a o ring chain

Re-lune the chain. Rain tends to wash the lube off.

Lube it, check the tension. If it’s still loud you may need to check for a kink.

Yep, tension. When mine got a kink in it, it made some awful noises.

Are you lubing your chain and keeping it tight?

I just lubed it but haven’t ridden it since. I usually lube it every 4-5 rides. My buddy tightened up the chain around 1500 miles (3k now). I’m worried that I’ll make it too tight or not get the wheel square if I tighten it.

Its a grom. If anything is going to be forgiving of mistakes its this thing

Chains can be noisy, however, let me ask a couple questions. What does the chain slack look like?

1. All bikes have a chain slack spec that you should maintain. Check your specs. When you have your rear end up, does the chain slack change as you are rotating the rear wheel?

2. How often do you lube your chain? Did you know that the only reason you lube an x-ring/o-ring chain is to keep the little rubber gaskets moisturized? Do you have any spots on the chain that are “kinked” or harder to bend than other parts of the chain?

Chains are a finicky thing but if you lube it (meaning only a small amount on the rubber gaskets only) and clean it they will last as long as 5k miles. On a grom it could last longer. One thing to note, after a chain is exposed to water it is best to lube as soon as possible afterwards once it dries.

I still have to check the slack. My buddy tightened the chain shortly after I bought the bike and shifts were much smoother. It’s probably out of spec as I have noticed that the shifts are getting a little “chocky”.

I lube it every 3-5 rides (my rides are usually a 20 mile round trip). I’ll check for kinks.

Thanks!!

You’re right. I have an irrational aversion to doing anything that involves wheel alignment. I remember when I was a little kid, my dad bought me my first “real” skateboard. I spent hours adjusting the trucks so that it tracked straight (without me on the board) only to have that all be for nothing the first time I pushed haha.

I kind of figured that the chain would need to be adjusted, but I’m sure part of me was asking just so that I could delay myself from actually doing it.

the swing arm will little little notches engraved into it with which the blocks will line up with. just make sure they match each side and you will be good to go.
