This doesn’t look like a Miata.

Buy the car and then immediately kick him in the balls for that throttle return spring nonsense.

Hella functional yo. It’s a .030 over cammed 350. I bet it sounds fantastic.

1977 Jaguar XJ-S, in red in good condition with a .030 over cammed Chevy 350 swap. My dream car brought to life for $3000 obo. It’s been three years since I saw one even remotely this complete for anywhere near this price and I’ve been kicking myself for the past three years for letting that one go. Unfortunately my job has cut me down to making basically nothing and the job search isn’t going great.

Gross, those are the worst air filters on earth. Why anyone puts them on their car I have no idea.

I have $1k lying around.... But I shouldn’t spend it on a car.

An interesting car but I agree that this isn’t a great time to invest in a project car.

Also, Club badges have arrived (now to figure out where would be the best location for them on the front fenders) and the Miata’s cylinder head is at the machine shop. While I’m tempted to make a cheater Miata for autocross, I don’t want to invest in engine-related performance modifications. I’m still saving/planning for that LFX-swap later on down on the line when this engine dies on me one last time.

Sorry to hear that. I got three grand in my emergency fund but I need that money lol. I wholly approve of an xjs with a 350, probably the best use of a 350 swap ever.

I’ll be honest, the Jag is probably less of a project than the Fox body. Timetable presuming I’d like to get a loan, buy the Jag, drive it for a month and if nothing catastrophic presents itself sell the Fox body to cover a majority of the purchase cost of the Jag. I figure I can get $2k out of a straight running manual notchback with no rust considering rusty shells missing an interior and glass are $1500 around here.

V6 Miatas are the best. Personally I’d do a Duratec swap but High Features are pretty sweet as well. I still stand by my reasoning that 200hp is the ideal amount for a Miata.

Do I spy an XJS? Hell yeah :)

Slight shame it’s got a 350, but if it’s another one on the road then I suppose that’s ok. That is my own personal bias as a Brit of course ;)

Either way if you get it you’ll be getting a car I’ve always wanted and I’ll be jealous ;)

I enjoy driving my cars and I’ve always wanted a big carbeurated V8 so this is a win win for me. I’m currently talking to my bank but each email response from the seller takes like a day for him to get around to it. Fairly certain the seller is an old guy that only gets on the computer once a day for 30 minutes.

06/23/2017 at 12:08, STARS: 0

Good points ;) I do think the unreliability of the V12 is massively overblown though. As far as I can tell the majority of conversions are done because people can’t be bothered to pay the parts costs compared to native V8s to fix things when they do go wrong, rather than any actual difference in reliability.

Good luck though! Sounds like a tough job actually buying the thing, but if it’s any consolation if there’s anyone else looking at it they’re playing with the same handicap ;)

Kinja'd!!! "Jake - Has Bad Luck So You Don't Have To" (murdersofa)
06/23/2017 at 12:11, STARS: 0

Yeah, the V12 itself is fantastic but the coils and fueling system are a huge issue. The best way to go would be a V12 with something like MSD engine management systems replacing everything with COPS and better fuel injection. Of course, there’s still the utter vacuum nightmare to deal with...

Kinja'd!!! "BiTurbo228 - Dr Frankenstein of Spitfires" (biturbo228)
06/23/2017 at 12:18, STARS: 1

Agreed that the complexity is a big issue. Personally, I’d sod all the vacuum nonsense and see if I can run it on ITBs and standalone management (including distributorless ignition), not that that would do anything for the fuel efficiency.

06/23/2017 at 12:31, STARS: 0

God, that centrifugal-retard dizzy sure is a piece of work. Also the whole deal where the engine is so smooth if one coil goes out you lose a bank of cylinders but *can’t tell* until your catalytic converter bursts into flames from all the unburnt fuel getting dumped on it.

Kinja'd!!! "BiTurbo228 - Dr Frankenstein of Spitfires" (biturbo228)
06/23/2017 at 13:39, STARS: 0

Haha! That’s genuinely impressive if bloody irritating.

Of course, get an old enough one here and you can run it without a cat so that’s less of a problem for me ;)

It’s a shame you guys never really got the AJ6 properly. I reckon you guys would have liked it back in the day. 220-odd horsepower and a heap more reliability.

Update: expect me to likely own this car by the end of the week. I’ve been the only guy to even inquire about it and found the car to drive well but require some work (paint is kinda shit, underbody has some rust in the lower skin of the floor pan, interior needs some love) but it’s pretty damn fast, sounds great, and all the electrics work and stunned me by how simple they seem compared to my ‘86 Mustang. Oh also the horn sounds like a damn cruise ship.

06/26/2017 at 12:17, STARS: 0

Yeah, the A/C works a bit wank due to the weird OEM Jag thermostat and the not-OEM A/C compressor. Some weirdness of “flip this switch under the dash, grab your left nut and turn the thermostat until you hear a ‘click’”. Not sure if that needs parts or just a complete re-wiring. Other than that the only real parts it would need are big things. Seats and/or upholstery, etc. Maybe mirrors.

Kinja'd!!! "BiTurbo228 - Dr Frankenstein of Spitfires" (biturbo228)
06/27/2017 at 13:50, STARS: 0

Haha that does sound convoluted. Sure it’s replaceable with something less bonkers though.

Not sure I could manage seats ;) just let me know if there’s any bits of trim or yeah mirrors or something :)

maybe just seat upholstery? lol. I think the HVAC system uses a thermostat of some kind instead of dumb “I want hotter” or “I want colder” controls.

My dad’s 2001 Olds Intrigue had a catalytic converter burst into flames after half of the V6 shut down when it was 3 months old. Dealer said it was the most expensive warranty repair they’ve ever done. Early 2000's GM quality!
