Politics, but not trying to be partisan...

Supporters of George W Bush would chant “USA! USA!” and it was obnoxious, but at least it was sort of patriotic.

Even during Obama’s term, people on the right would chant “USA! USA!” when they got a “win” against him.

Now? People chant “Trump! Trump! Trump!” any time the right wins the tiniest victory.

I don’t care what party you’re from, that’s terrifying.

Jesus people, racist people, anti-gay people... they have all been very nervous in the last 8 years. The whole BLM thing, the whole gay marriage thing, the whole poor people getting benefits thing, the whole people that are different then I am everywhere I go thing makes those people very uncomfortable. They look at Trump as the guy that is changing all that for them. So they totally see him as their “savior”.

...and perhaps since everything he stands for is quite un-american, “Trump” is more fitting than “U.S.A.”

To be clear, there are a lot of people on “the right” who don’t support Trump. And there are a lot of Obama supporters that voted for Trump. See link below. Now a large percentage of the people who did vote for Trump certainly did it because of his cult of personality, and I suspect those are the people who are chanting “Trump.” They also are the people most likely to be harmed by his actions.

Not really. We have systems in place to prevent a dictatorship.

The only thing that I have noticed in this presidency as opposed to at least the last two is how downright nasty the president’s outspoken critics are. Personally I do not support the current administration 100%, but I think they are still doing a good job. The stock market has hit multiple all-time highs, there were several important executive orders passed, such as the anti-lobbying one and the opioid task force one. Arrests of illegal immigrants at the border are at an all-time low, as is unemployment. I can’t find fault with any of that.

That said, we’re still TBD on how the education and energy experiments works out. It’s been 90 days since the original travel ban, but we don’t have any more extreme vetting for immigrants or refugees. TBD on how things play out with Syria, Russia, and ISIS as well, although all are at best loose cannons.

I’m talking about in the realms of American politics. The terms “left” and “right” come from where in congress the politician’s desk sat in relation to the aisle. Conservatives sat on the right side of the aisle, liberals on the left. The Reps that sat farthest from the aisle had the least moderate ideologies, and were considered “far right” or “far left”, as they sat on the far sides of the chamber.

Communism, while considered a leftist idea, is not American politics.

She had way too much baggage for moderate republicans, and way too much baggage for conservative democrats. Plus, she already lost out to Obama, so nominating her after that was a ridiculously idiotic blunder.

trump didn’t win the popular vote, and in all actuality only a tiny portion of eligible voters voted for him. His own party doesn’t really like him. There’s always a far left and a far right in congress. The most conservative are the far right, the most liberal are the far left. Those paradigms shift over time, but that fact is constant.

What’s going on in this thread is that there’s conflation between perceived definitions of “far left” and “far right”. What I’m strictly talking about are the ideologies representatives have when compared to their peers. If the DNC runs a candidate in 2020 that is more conservative than their peers, yet more liberal than the right (i.e. a “moderate Democrat”), I think that they would have a better chance of winning the election than a rep who is in the “far left” category that I have laid out. It would be much harder for that candidate to be PERCEIVED as a member of the “far left” congressional side, despite what others say about them.

Does that make sense to you?

Kinja'd!!! "LongbowMkII" (longbowmkii)
06/23/2017 at 11:42, STARS: 1

I meant within the republican party. Rep Steve King is half a beer away from suggesting a eugenics program.

I dont really care about democrats winning in 2020 or any other election. We’re at the point where the choices are Reagan(dem) or Trump(rep). Dem turnout has been absolute shit for the past 10 years aside from a once in a generation centrist. Despite what the perception is, Obama was a centrist. “dont kill each other and let’s outsource gov functions to private firms” If everyone agrees the sky is green doesn’t make it so.

The democrats are losing so many seats using the “third way” WJ Clinton paved. and stepping right to keep up with Bush/TeaParty since. They’d probably lose going “far left” buttheyre already losing thousands with this tactic.

For years my state rep was a dyed in the wool bluedog democrat. super conservative, but he was destroyed by a tea party guy by using the D (giggity) to tie him to Obama. No matter how far right a Dem is they’ll be painted as a liberal coming to steal your guns and institute sharia law. national Democrats are so concerned with optics that they miss the forest for the trees. For all the Republican’s faults the lack of a message isn’t one of them.

Stop worrying about perceptions and find a message. At least lose with some dignity.

Kinja'd!!! "PatBateman" (PatBateman)
06/23/2017 at 13:06, STARS: 0

The DNC have to do a complete rehab of their message and their image. There was a NYT piece that said the same thing on Wednesday. They lost the blue collar union voters in middle America for whatever reason, and it has cost the dearly on the Federal level. Democrats only hold 16 governor’s positions, and they are the controlling party in only 13 state legislatures (if the information I’m reading is correct).

While you and I pay attention to messages, so many others don’t. That’s why perception is important in politics, communications, and life; without it, the message is ignored by too many.

No, we are not Capitalist by nature. We are a Oligarchical Socialist Economy. Between the Fed dumping wheelbarrows full of money into the market and artificially inflating it, and the corporate loopholes and tax breaks, we are far from a Capitalist economy. Both the GOP and the Democrats still think that the government should offer “tax incentives” to keep jobs and companies here, when all they do is shift the burden costs of the government from businesses to the labor class (non-business owners). This means that the businesses that rely on the government for roads, shipping lanes, the patent system, low interest capital, natural resources and other market “overheads” are not paying to support their own interests. Instead, the amount of free cash of the labor class is collapsing and will bring about the end of the successful market that exists in the USA. It’s hard to have an economy that thrives on mass consumption when the consumers pay the governmental burden of the producers AND are responsible for their own subsistence.

If you agree that Capitalism is required, the majority of excess labor and capital must return to the laborers to keep the machine going, and right now the stream is drying up and the machinery SHOULD be slowing down, but the government is still dumping good money after bad money, but I digress ... the concept of infinite growth is impossible and the USA isn’t Capitalist..

Kinja'd!!! "PatBateman" (PatBateman)
06/23/2017 at 14:13, STARS: 0

I’m not trying to debate, but the US’ economy is capitalism. It isn’t pure free trade capitalism, but it’s capitalism by definition. And the definition is as follows (per Merriam-Webster):

“an economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free market .”

Most people don’t want pure capitalism anyways.

Kinja'd!!! "Sweet Trav" (thespunbearing)

Nah, the GOP message over the past 40 years is loud and clear, the liberals/atheists/government/Mexicans/muslims/”others”/enemy du jour are going to kill you and/or raise your taxes, whichever is worse.

They’ve had an extensive network of media to support this message. Anyone can see that there is a vast conservative media in the US(for better and worse) but there is no left wing equivalent. Sure there’s the corporate media, but their goals and the left’s are diametrically opposed. See the WaPo/NYT/MSNBC (the ‘liberal’ boogeymen) complain about the cost of universal coverage, but ignore the costs of potentially engaging (more) in Syria.
