My trusty tape deck adapter sounds like crap, so I was wondering through Frys looking for a new double din. Suddenly appears a 6.1" touchscreen Blaupunkt Sacramento 290mc for $55. Let’s look at online reviews!

Kinja'd!!!

Based on my internet sleuthing, this deck doesn’t exist. I can’t find a single review, user manual, picture, or anyone other than Frys selling it. Blaupunkt’s own site doesn’t even mention it.

That’s amazing, it truly does not exist on the internet.

Weird...looks like some independent online manuals sites have it, but it must be some kind of orphan. Like a stop-gap between the development of the Fresno and the Berkeley.

Wow, this is very odd. Your post has even become the top Google hit!

Was there anything actually in the box? I’m sure the internet can overlook something complicated like a media receiver but I can’t imagine it ever forgetting a simple box. Ergo...there’s nothing in the box.

Blaupunkt stuff (when the internet allows it to exist) is typically decent gear.

Probably a Frys only model. You can find the same practice across the biggest of the big box retailers.

Well now you just have to buy it. If it were me I would be too intrigued not to, especially for only $55. This is either some twilight zone stuff.. or a cheap Chinese clone.

Probably a Fry’s specific SKU of another model. You’ll see that fairly often at big box stores (COSTCO, and Sam’s most common, but Home Depot, Best Buy, etc. sometimes) where they’ll perform an order large enough to use the whole factory line for a period of time. They often have different negotiated costs and quality requirements so the manufacturers like to keep them separate from the general retail stream. Sometimes they’re identical to another model with just a different screen print of the model numbers or a different case, but sometimes they have fewer or additional features than the normal consumer line. Finding out exactly what you’ve got generally requires a tear-down since the companies don’t update their public facing literature for one-off production lots.

$55 at Frys? Oh shit, payday is tomorrow and there’s a Frys down the street from work, I might be replacing the head-unit in my GTI.

Almost looks like it was a Frys only item, similar to Goodyear tire models sold only at WalMart/Sears, etc.

For $55 it might be worth a shot, my single din was a lot more than that

When I was looking for a new double din I was tempted by the cheap touchscreen units but I have experienced both and in general those cheap touchscreen units work fine but sacrifice amp and sould quality vs. a brand name more basic unit.

Kinja'd!!!

Have had one of these for a couple years now and it is not as fancy but the sound quality is amazing. This thing plus a pair of 6.5 inch JBL door speakers have traveled between my last 3 cars and have made each of them 100% better than OEM.

Now I am considering dropping ~$350 on a nice touchcreen apple carplay headunit which has sound quality like my Kenwood but a nice touchscreen interface.

I have found walmart to do this pretty often because of their large scale. I will find some sort of random product there and search as hard as I can and can only find rebranded versions of it.

I would have agreed up until the last few years. The name was sold off in 2011 and it’s just licensing deals now. Bosch no longer designs or makes any of the Blaupunkt equipment, it’s all done in China.

That division of Bosch still makes car audio products, but it’s all OEM stuff.

I would tend to agree. I hate seeing once proud brand names reduced to hawking cheap Chinese crap. I have a classic Dual 1219 turntable that my dad bought in the late ‘60s or early ‘70s, and I cringe every time I see some PoS $20 car stereo with the same name on it. The only ones that care about the brand are us old folks who remember the good ol’ days, so why bother bringing it back to sell cheap crap to teenagers?

I still have a few pieces of classic Blaupunkt gear around, just waiting for the right car(s). The first is a NIB Dallas SQM-88:

Kinja'd!!!

And the second is a VW-labeled Frankfurt from the ‘80s that I picked up when I worked for a VW dealer.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

And as a kid, my first ever stereo was actually the Frankfurt that was pulled from my mom’s 1977 VW Dasher. Dad bought me a Heathkit power supply kit, and I used some speakers I picked up at a garage sale. Good times, good memories.

Thats a similar one to the one I have. And yeah most of the time OEM audio systems are set with the base whack stuff. Theres exceptions, but once you put in the better speakers and head unit, etc you’ll be a changed man or woman forever.

Well how did it work/sound? I’m looking at something to drop in my son’s 2001 Honda Accord. He’s mostly interested in Bluetooth and hands free, the rest is a bonus. I read some comment on Walmart wen site that said the size is not a “true” DIN, thoughts?
