Kinja'd!!!

Just replaced the factory transmission oil with Motul 300. According to the forums it should help make the shift feel a lot smoother. We shall see. Two things I learned:

Transmission oil smells almost as bad as everyone says it does.

You can still smell it mentally even though you’ve washed up and gone inside.

Pictured: what I sometimes wish my car was.

Can’t speak for your car, but when I changed the trans fluid in my V6 accord a month back, the difference in shifting was night and day.

That’s what I’m hoping for. One of the things journalists don’t tell you about on the BRZ is the transmission could be better. It’s notchy and the gearing means you’re ALWAYS between gears in stop and go traffic. Want to cruise at 20mph? You’re either hitting 3000rpm in second or 2000rpm in 3rd. You may think, oh third would be the best choice. WRONG. When the person in front of you slows down to 15mph you’re lugging the engine in 3rd and 2nd is the only option. Then when they speed up to 20mph you’re back in third. The entire commute. Same story with 10-12mph in first and second.

If it’s as bad as the diff fluid in my ralliart, I totally get it. That stuff has a way of forming phantom smell pathways in your brain.

I wasn’t a fan of motul in mine, Amsoil is delightful though.

It helped in both my WRX’s. One could assume it helps all Subaru’s.

What didn’t you like about the Motul?

That seems to be the consensus. I wasn’t able to drive it after I finished so I just let the car idle a bit to distribute the oil. Moment of truth will be tomorrow.

It starts to crunch at 8000rpm on track :p

But more seriously, I also had real concerns about it’s compatibility with copper due to the gl5 rating. Specifically with the amount of extreme pressure additives and the temps I operate at.

When I changed mine in the 944 I left my door from my garage and into my house open so I could hear my daughter if she woke up and it smelled up the house. My wife was mad. I originally tried royal purple and it felt really smoothe except for into second which was complete crap; so I switched to one of redlies products and it was almost as smoothe as the royal purple but much better between 1-2.

Seriously. That stuff smells horrible. Glad I decided to open the garage door and get all the fresh air in that I could.

It sounds like the newer WRX has similar gearing. Couple that with the stock oversensitive throttle, and in stop and go traffic you’ve got more jerk than 13 year old me when left home alone.

Yeah it’s bad... and I was transporting a container of the used stuff last week and had the cap come off the tank and leak. Thankfully it was in my Outback with a rubber liner that can be washed off, but it got my whole car smelling in a hurry.

In other news, my wife is originally from Flint, Michigan and her dad worked in machine shops for years supplying GM. She actually likes that smells, as it apparently reminds her of her dad coming home from work. At least I never get complaints when I come in from wrenching!

mehhhhh I don’t know about smoother.

Put in in my WRX in February. First and second are always cantankerous when cold and this didn’t help might actually be worse, but all this is non quantitative, aka #tehfeels. So from the forums, it it cost more money you can bet they’ll say its great,  gives improved throttle response, faster spool and feels more planted...

I just solved that last night by moving and getting a heated garage hahaha

I just drove it this morning. I wouldn’t say it’s as dramatic as everyone on the forum said. There is a slight change in smoothness but it’s not as dramatic as everyone was saying. Oh well. At least I’m good for the transmission oil change for a while now.

Also, presumably you got a relatively clean bill of health for your transmission (and diff?) via not finding any chunks when draining the old out.

That was nice to see for me, might have thrashed a clutch in 30k miles but at least the gears are good!.

That’s for sure. I saw a post on ft86 where a guy’s magnetic drain out had metal shavings protruding from it. To my surprise mine barely had any in it. I was expecting more considering I learned to drive stick in this car.
