Kinja'd!!!

Over the past few weeks the Passat occasionally takes longer to start if it sits for a few hours.

This happens at random, be it hot or cold, but always after the car sits for the night. IE: When I start it in the morning.

Mileage is at 38k

Never failed to start, but it takes 2-3 seconds when it used to be almost instantaneous.

I have a 1.8T EA888 Passat TSI and I can confirm that mine started doing this at around 32k miles.

My local VW dealerships say it’s normal.

I’m not sure if I feel more relieved or more concerned.

My Passat ate 1qt of oil in 1500 miles, VW also said it is normal.

To my disbelief, mine isn’t eating oil at all

It has many, many problems, but oil consumption isn’t one

Fuel system somehow slowing down? If it’s a “it sits and then this happens” then it could be something like the fuel lines losing pressure, signaling a poor fitting or something? Just a wild guess.

Probably a D2 Audi S8.

I was guessing high-pressure fuel pump, but your guess is as good as mine.

Which problems? Let us compare, I have some also:

Interior rattles.

DSG often misbehaves.

Mysterious sounds from the suspension that can’t be found by any mechanic.

Oil consumption.

Might be bleeding fuel pressure off, so it takes a second to build to injector pressure. That would most likely generate a MIL though. Stuck purge valves often cause long cranks in VWAG products, but that’s almost always after a fill up. Can you hear the lift pump prime when you unlock the car and open the door?

You might want to sit down. It’s a long list.

It’s shaking when driving (It needs an alignment that I have scheduled for tomorrow at the dealer)

It’s shaking while braking (The brake rotors are warped; we’re on our third set of rotors, all covered under warranty. We drive mainly city.)

Interior rattling, especially the dashboard

The transmission is slipping, which means the 2-3, 3-4, and 5-6 gear changes make a loud thunk

The AC isn’t very cold anymore

The steering is squeaking

The car takes a little longer to turn on as yours is doing

I don’t drive it hard. My mother drives it half the time and she drives gently too.

Here are just the problems I can think of off the top of my head.

No MIL and no suspicious sounds. Will pay more attention tomorrow and report back.

Also, since I have the opportunity to drink front the fountain of german car knowledge that is TFritsch I need to ask your opinion on oil consumption.

The Passat flashed it’s low oil light at me just 2000 miles after the last oil change, VW says it is normal, my friend who had a GTI and now drives a 1.8T Audi A3 sedan also says it is normal. What say you?

(I obviously stopped at the closest gas station and plopped in 1qt of Castrol 5w40)

To be honest it was closer to 2000 miles.

Could it be as simple as the battery? 40k is about all I get out of my batteries, but I live somewhere hot.

Also live somewhere hot, but the electronics seem quite fine, I actually hope it is the battery.

If you can get hands on a VAG-COM or other cable, it might help. Datalog the heck out of the first crank.

A quart in 2000 is about average. I see a few that use almost none, but those are the rare exceptions. Most use at least two to three  quarts between service. I don’t know about Brazil, but here there’s an extended engine warranty on TFSI’s for oil consumption, up to 80k miles they’ll re-ring it if it uses a quart in 1000. In fact, just this week I saw a B8 A4 with rings so bad it only made 90psi compression and badly gouged a cylinder wall, just past 80k miles so Audi politely told him to fuck off.

Cars that are driven more around town and short trips tend to use more, and there are common failures of the PCV diaphragm that causes increased consumption, also an extended warranty part. If yours has suddenly started using a quart in 2000 and didn’t before, the PCV valve is the first thing I’d check. Try to take the oil cap off at idle, if the valve is bad the cap will be sucked hard down into the valve cover.

Can confirm that VW electronics get all sorts of fucked up with a bad battery. The radio and sunroof in my dad’s MK6 Jetta Sportwagen TDI stopped working. Then the battery died a week or so later. New-ish battery (because buyback) fixed everything.

I read about the extended warranties and some of the recalls the rest of the world got, I don’t think we ever got that in Brazil but I can always use my lawyer powers.

I got the car 6 months ago and it always drank about 1 qt every 2000 miles, will check the PCV tomorrow.

Once again I’m very thankful for your attention.

don’t freak out,but what year? i know pre-2012 has some timing tensioner issues exacerbated by low oil pressure, etc. it’s quickly inspectable.

40k is when the factory does spark plugs, and a major filter service. hopefully just time to do those things.

i have a 2010 a3 w.the ea888. it is pretty regular starting and its on its original battery. fuses however...it eats those.

There is a slight suction to the oil cap, but nothing hard. Also used the dipstick method to check PCV failure, at idle there is no awful PCV sound and there is a slight diference in idle sound with the dipstick in or out.

06/24/2017 at 01:36, STARS: 0

Sounds ok to me, “slight suction” is exactly how I’d describe normal operation. If the diaphragm fails the cap is damn near impossible to remove while running.
