Is a total bust. 50s trucks and sedans, most of which look way too far gone. I have no idea where the delorean is, since apparently there is one. pretty much all I saw that caught my eye was this:

If you don’t bid on the fire truck I’m not sure we can be friends.

Where in god’s name would I put it? even if I didn’t live with my parents? how much could this thing even sell for? certainly not 1000$. How would I even tow it?

lol I appreciate the sentiment though. It does have all the wants. convertible fire truck!

You know it’s bad when the *least* rusty cars I found were an International Scout and a ‘71 Civic...

You know, there’s an opportunity there for you to cobble together the ‘59-’61 Franken-Mopar of your dreams—-

I’ve already seen enough rust for one lifetime. I don’t need anymore.

I’d better not ever get a surprise distant relative inheritance or settlement for anything, because at that point, I would set the controls for the heart of the sun on very, very stupid things. Like 20 years worth.

I scrolled through all of it, and looked at quite a few of the cars. It was pretty depressing. Bodies/interiors were in horrible shape across the board, and unless I could get them up on a lift to see the underside, I’d never bid higher than parts car/scrap value for them. To top it off, they’re mostly undesirable body styles. Bleah.

Better stay the hell away from this auction then - my guess is that most of these cars will go for peanuts, which means that they’d be *just* tempting enough to take a flyer on — but of course few of them seem to have *anything* worthwhile still on them...

Ooooh . Aaah . Not to mention all those DIVCOs, WTF?

And the Hudson *and* Nash pickups? Each about a one-year production dealer service only rare mutant? How?

Even a Rambler Marlin - and a bunch of Hansa group.

Yeah, I saw the Marlin. That and the Skyliner might be two of the few *cars* worth saving. Although I like those old Rambler wagons...

Let’s be frank, I would not be buying cars very worth saving. I just don’t have it in me. $50,000 of $800-$1500 obscure German, French, and defunct US hulks from that auction? That I could do.

Yeah, but then you’d *BE* Ron Hackenberger. Maybe buy a couple of the weirdest ones (starting with the Trabbi) and get them back on the road again, just for shits and grins?

Maybe shop for a bunch of pit bikes to re-engine all the minicars, and set maximum rustledrive on all the rest. Supercharged Iron Duke in the DS, drive as as - that kind of jimmies rustling. Maybe power the Trabant with a three-cylinder Kubota diesel.

I don’t know about undesirable, some pretty obscure/rare stuff here. but yeah, I wouldn’t touch most of these with a ten foot pole.

I just meant 4 door sedans/wagons v. 2 door hardtops and convertibles. There’s no way on earth to make money restoring sedans/wagons that I’m aware of.

Kinja'd!!! "My bird IS the word" (mybirdistheword)
06/21/2017 at 17:25, STARS: 1

Yeah, I was disappointed at the lack of convertibles. Although given how they have been left outside I really can’t be too sad.

As long as the Trabbi smokes, it should look realistic.

You could really go nuts and drop a 215 Buick in one, a 1/2 389 from a Tempest in another, off the wall funk like that—

Shhh don’t spread that around too much. I want everyone to expect top shelf prices so my lowball bids get through on one or two things.

06/21/2017 at 17:31, STARS: 1

Did you throw a few down? I think if you sprinkle enough lowballs in there, you might get “lucky” on something - I see that people are starting to do that.

I put bids on two cars and a scooter. Well, two Crosleys so I’m not sure if that counts as two cars or not. I’m debating about a bid on a 56 Desoto Sedan too.

Kinja'd!!! "WilliamsSW" (williamssw)
06/21/2017 at 17:35, STARS: 1

I think that’s 1.5 cars or so. :) I’d want to go out there and take a closer look, plus I have no means to haul anything home.

Oh, and nowhere to store anything. Other than that, I’d be in :)

Kinja'd!!! "Kiltedpadre" (kiltedpadre)
06/21/2017 at 17:40, STARS: 1

I could easily squeeze two Crosleys in my garage. Getting it home is one reason I’m debating about the Desoto. I think that car and the trailer is just past what I can do without a weight distribution hitch on my truck. There was one Crosley that looked really good in the pictures but it was from the COBRA motor timeframe so I don’t want to mess with that.

Kinja'd!!! "WilliamsSW" (williamssw)
06/21/2017 at 17:44, STARS: 1

I’d think it unlikely that the Cobra was still under the hood? Then again, with this guy, who knows... If you got it cheap enough you could just swap something else in.

You’re not *that* far from the auction, right? At least the same state?

Kinja'd!!! "Kiltedpadre" (kiltedpadre)
06/21/2017 at 17:53, STARS: 1

I figure it all depends on how early in his hoarding he got it. If he bought it early on it might still have it. My dream swap into one of those would be a 1.0l ecoboost, but that might be beyond my skills or checkbook.

Yeah, I’m just under two hours from the auction site. My neighbor might be going and said if he does he’ll take a look at whatever I bid on. That way if it appears to be in pretty good shape I can consider upping a bid.

Here’s links to the actual auctioneer site in case you were interested. The DeLorean is in day 1, and I didn’t find the LeFrance, but I didn’t get through everything.

Day 2 http://www.vanderbrinkauctions.com/auctions_pictures.php?page=18&detail=206

Small world story, the owner of this auction company grew up in my little South Dakota home town and still lives nearby. I won’t say I know her, but I know who she is along with most of her family. Her dad started the largest auto salvage yard in the mid west, Nordstroms Automotive, and naturally they’re some serious gear heads. She has hosted some serious auto/motorcycle auctions, including the auction last year of the Nebraska Chevy dealership which was closed in the 60's(?), other notable items include a 400 hp V8 swapped Ford 8N, and at one time the worlds largest collection of ‘57 Chevy’s, most of which were in rough shape (obviously, coming from a salvage yard), but still. I was at that auction and it was pretty impressive.

Rust and grease don’t give you tetanus. Soil, microbes, germs, do, as I understand it.

Kinja'd!!! "RamblinRover Luxury-Yacht" (ramblininexile)
07/14/2017 at 19:34, STARS: 1

Quite. However, a rust substrate on things with sharp edges can retain tetanus spores, particularly if said rust is laden with soil in a permitting environment, and provides a penetration to the skin. It’s certainly not hostile to the spores. Hence the cliche, and my joke based on the cliche.

I’ve heard stories of a tetanus death caused by thorns in a graveyard, as the spores were extremely prevalent there and the thorns provided an attack vector... I also seem to recall an instance my great uncle mentioned of a day-laborer on his farm whose teeth-picking with a knife provided entry for tetanus, resulting in his death.
