I pose what could possibly be an impossible question to answer. Someone gives you the keys to a Miura and 288 GTO with unlimited funds/insurance/repairs/blank check, but you can only drive and keep one. Which do you take and why?
For me, I adore both and place them within my top 5 dream cars to own, but I’d have to take the Miura because as much as I believe the 288 GTO is the bestest turbo Fezza before the 488 GTB, there’s a carbed V12 and louvers that I desire more.

The problem is that as wonderful and as competent the GTO is... it is just a wonderful car from the 80s.
There is much richer romance surrounding the Miura; how it came to be, the fact that it didn’t look like anything else at the time, the people involved (Lamborghini, Bertone, Dallara, Gandini, Stanzani, Wallace), the people who owned them – and, above all, the fact that we are talking about the 60s here.
It even created its own class: “supercar”. Yes, the original GTO of the 60s, for example, was a truly fabulous machine and
yet it was not a supercar
in the sense we understand it today.
The Miura is an icon (sorry for the cliché) not just of automotive history, but of a whole period (way too much mythologised, yes) of the late Western world.

Don’t worry, there is no contest. The GTO is the better car, by a long margin (and not because it is newer/more modern).
The question you have to ask yourself is: apart from the obvious mechanical/aural/tactile/technical pleasures of driving it, which one you wouldn’t mind keeping in your living room? (that would be my case) Which one you would secretly visit in your garage just to have yet another glimpse of it, even after years of ownership?

I’d take the Muria because of the emotional response if produces when I see one. I also read a fantastic story written by I think Peter Brock or one of the main R&T editors back in the day about him picking up a straight piped Muria and driving it a few hundred miles to deliver to the boss, racing a corvette and seeing something north of 150 mph while the corvette faded in the mirror. That story for me is what a super car is about.
Also, Muria’s caught fire before Ferrari made it cool.
