Kinja'd!!!

After the trip to Vegas and back, I was painfully aware of all of my Suburban’s shortcomings. I sort of hated it when I got home. Then, I spent the first 2 days gone driving the wife’s 2016 RAV4. That car is so godawful that it made me long for my 18 year old like of crap. Seriously- who test drives a RAV4 and says “yes, this is fine. I’d like to go into debt for this.”

(full disclosure: the RAV4 is a company car)

When I had my ‘96 Yukon, I traveled a lot for work. I loved when I got back home, out of a rental car, and back in the Yukon. Man, I wish that truck would’ve been reliable. It, and the ‘02 Tundra that replaced it, are still my two favorite vehicles that I’ve owned.

Interesting. My ‘96 chevy van was reliable as hell. So was my ‘05 Yukon XL. Anything unreliable was my own fault ;)

The ‘05 Yukon XL was like the king of the road. Just keep feeding it fuel and it would do whatever the hell you asked it to. Very, very comfortable too. Leather, heated seats, moonroof, 3 zone auto climate control, DVD, Bose etc. It was a seriously nice machine and I never had any major issues with it.

The ‘96 Chevy van felt like a pile o crap but it just kept on running. 350 V8 was unstoppable, 1 ton suspension was uncomfortable but solid, cloth interior was uncomfortable but durable... never had any major issues with the thing. Some maintenance from time to time, late in it’s life had to replace an alternator and a temp sender, but considering the life it gave and the abuse I gave it those are really minor repairs.

I just got a lemon. I still have the stack of nearly $15k in warranty receipts for the truck. Only thing that never got replaced was basically the shortblock. Then, I was driving it, the dash lit up like a Christmas tree, drove it to a Toyota dealer and bought a Tundra.

I’m thankful I had that warranty. Transmission replacement, transfer case, diffs, A/C, starter, alternator, entire fuel system, tank/lines/injectors. Head gaskets, etc, etc. I bought it used, 1 year old. If I were a betting man, I’d almost bet it had been a flood damaged car with as many issues as it had.

It’s also part of my green/tan curse. The four vehicles I’ve had with a green exterior/tan interior, have suffered catastrophic mechanical failure. I’ve sworn off that color combo.

One of my housemates in college had a current gen RAV-4 that I drove a few times. It was a car, it drove like a car. It had a steering wheel, seats, a trunk that was bigger than the one you get in a sedan, a shitty touch-operated entertainment system and an engine I suppose. It’s for people that don’t care about their car besides that.

It always felt so good to get out of it and back into my second-gen 4Runner.

I think you have to live in Washington to get one.

It is a car. It drives like a cheap car. It has a steering wheel. It has miserable, chiropractor-funding, tortuous seats. A small trunk for a supposed SUV thing. It has a shitty touch-operated entertainment system and a boring engine. It has a six speed automatic that manages to be worse than a CVT. It doesn’t have a single ounce of sound deadener. It’s just the worst car I think I’ve ever driven.

At least the gas mileage is... Crap. 22.1 lifetime average. Her previous Outback was at 28. I miss that Outback horribly.
