Kinja'd!!!

So as some of you know I do video editing for sports and I have completely crazy hours. For example, today I started working at 2:30AM. Tomorrow I’ll be there in the evening, next week I’ll have a couple 12AM shifts. I’ve been there for 20 or so months and I’m still goddamn part time. I work hard and do a good job, I get along to an extent with everyone there, and I treat everyone with respect. They’ve promoted a couple people who started working *after* I did. Here’s the kicker. I don’t hang out with anyone at work. A lot of them drink together, socialize, etc. No one has invited me to anything and when I ask people if they want to try *new restaurant* or go see some art or whatever they always are too busy or can’t make it. Don’t be fucking fake nice and just say not interested.

Anyways I feel with my coworkers and my job there I’ve reached a plateau. I’ve been trying to find a better position for around a year and am open to relocating. I have a Master’s and redesigned my resume with the help of my sister, parents, a couple of professional designers, a couple Oppo members (and a few ex-Oppo ones i keep in touch with), etc. Now another thing is... I know next to no one professionally. My network is zero. I have a lot of people on LinkedIn but most of them are coworkers or classmates from undergrad/grad school. I’m pretty good at video editing and Photoshop work, can do unity 3D and graphic design as well.

Kinja'd!!!

It’s also I want out of this goddamn bubble that is Long Island. Being a Muslim born American and the town I live in, I’m never going to penetrate that bubble because I’m brown and would never fit in with my town’s beach club/country club lifestyle. I’ve never hung out with my neighbors and some of them are around my age. They just go about life living in their own rich world far away from reality and that’s the kind of lifestyle they’re born and raised in.

My wife ran into that a bit... moved to upstate NY in high school, never able to infiltrate the “local” culture and eventually moved back out to California.

What town in upstate, I might know it... a lot of places there aren’t very well educated and are more country and rural

Oh God I’m sorry she not only had to live in Upstate NY, let alone go to HS there.

I think you should try attending some professional networking events that way you can try to build your network without the extra curricular socializing.

Do you know where I’d find info about such events?

“a lot of places there aren’t very well educated”

Why didn’t you just come out and say “is it Rochester? I bet it’s Rochester.”

I’ve been, they’re largely unhelpful. Just happy hours with people talking about how great they are or recruiters saying “if you’re interested apply on our site.”

Between Staatsburg and Rhinebeck (I’ve never been back there...) so kind of “southern” upstate I suppose - her father worked at the IBM office out there at the time. Ended up at UCSB, (before it got super $$$...) for college.

Off the top of my head not sure but a little google-fu should come up with something. There’s bound to be some graphic design or video production conferences that peak your interest where you can find some like minded professionals in the business.

So, I don’t know if she actually still sends out this newsletter, because it’s been a long time since I was subscribed, but trying signing up for this:

http://rachelgogel.com/joblist.php

She used to, and maybe still does, send out a monthly newsletter of creative job openings around NYC.

Anything for Nibby! And anything to get you out of the upscale hellscape that is Long Island.

Also consider making yourself a nice business card to give out if you don’t already have one. With your skills you should design one and use some high quality blank business cards to print a few of your own instead of using VistaPrint.

I don’t have any knowledge as for jobs in that industry but look around Richmond, VA if you are serious of getting out of NY (our property taxes are hella low). Its a growing city, that is full of “young” professionals and has companies from all types of industries that may be in need of you Nibby!

God no. Bronx born and raised.

I know some people who were raised on LI and couldn’t wait to leave. A work friend of mine taught at Adelphi for a few years and she has the horror stories to prove it. LI is only great if you’re an older mostly white, wealthy male.

Rich white girls have it pretty good here too. My cousin went to school at Adelphi but she doesn’t really have many horror stories from there. But that was also 20+ years ago

My friend who taught is from Sierra Leone and is of Middle Eastern descent if that tells you anything about the remarks she’s heard (not from students). One story that shocked me was when she would plan trips to the MoMA or Carnegie Hall many of her student’s parents would not allow their COLLEGE AGE kids to go because “the city was too dangerous”. Many of her students had never even left Long Island.

Hah I definitely believe that! A coworker asked for coverage cause she had to work an overnight and her parents didn’t want her to drive home at 3AM or whatever. I talked to her about it and told her it’s not a big deal and you’re 20-something whatever her age is... you’re going to work and home. Told her I’ve been doing this for years, it’s fine.

Just heavily sheltered. Another cousin lives 15 minutes away and he’s 24. He rarely drives because his parents don’t let him.
